opinions on foxfaces

My LFS said they are not reef-safe, but i heard of people having success with them.

To add, or not to add?

Mixed reef by the way.

I have a Siganus unimaculatus - One Spot Foxface in a mixed reef. The Magnificent Foxface and the One Spot and just the plain old Foxface are reef safe. The are herbivores. The eat algae and nori and the like.

The LFS guy -- who probably doesn't understand "reef safe" may have been talking about the POISIONOUS dorsal fins on the Siganus. He's gentle, gets along with all the other fish in the reef, but Don't Touch. If you do, you'll only do it once and not again.

Yes, reef safe. Great fish.

abosultely reef safe. The Signus Lo (regular foxface) that I had was an outstanding fish. It ate just about anything I gave it and was very personable and got along with everyone else in the tank.

They are awesome fish to have. That is until you get cut/stung. Now i'm just embittered aginst them. Great for getting rid of invasive calurpa though.

My Foxface Lo is reef safe and will eat any algea including valonia. Without it, my tank would be overrun w/ valonia.
I would not have a tank w/out one (tank should be atleast 75g).
I've got xenia, zoo, LPS, SPS and a colt---he never nips.

I have a foxface, its a great fish. Its fins are poisonous, so you have to be careful when working with the tank. But they only use them as self defence, and they are very peaceful too. My foxface just goes to the opposite end when I have hands in tank.

I wouldn't trade my foxface for anything but he isn't what I would consider reef safe. He ate all my zoanthids and I had to remove my open brain because he was starting to pick on it

Well I've had my FF for a little over a year. He started out in our 55 then went into our 125 lasy December. He started off great but after about 4-5 months, he turned into a zombie.......developing a taste for brains that is. MY wife and myself were very upset. But we knew there was a chance that something like this might happen. You can see all our brains in our gallery. So now we are brainless. He's left our gonis and Euphyllia alone. Still a cool fish though.

great reef safe fish.Has lots of personality and eats lots of algae, and sadly any lps that I tried. But fine in a soft coral tank.

I have heard that they are great reef fish. BTW what is the minimum size tank for one? I just set up a 72 gallon (w/ 20 gallon sump/fuge) and would love to get one. I am getting a yellow tang though so i wonder if it might be a bioload issue with a yellow tang, 2 percs, 2 chromis, a 6-line wrasse, and a royal gramma, and maby a damsel.

I think a 72 might be pushing it, but you might be ok. When ours was in our 55 he was just a little over an inch and a half. He was very skittish and always hid. Now in the 125 he's out more and seems much happier.

I think that fish list, without the foxface, would be enough for a 72g. Instead of a damsel I would go with some kind of small blennie or goby though

ok. thats what i was thinking, but i love the electric blue damsels even thought they can be mean....it would be the last fish I put in my tank.

Sometimes they will eat xenia, or nip at some fleshy LPS. IME and others that I've read..

Mine did that for a while, but it's because I think he wanted to eat algae, after I supplied a sheet of Nori daily he stopped.

Haven't had any issues with my foxface (other than above) - mines really shy tho
