opinions on oceanic salt

many use it cuz its cheap. It was one of the first salts that i used, but have since ditched it and wont use it again now that i've had reef crystals, which is also cheap but much better.

oceanic can be very high in calcium...not sure it hurts anything, but its sure not needed. I was having it in the +500 range. I also had low pH with oceanic. My pH was always at 7.7. I did a couple little changes and it brought it up to 8.0, but when i switched to IO and reef crystals later on, my pH has been 8.3 ever since and i didnt do any more changes besides the salts.

It's a good salt.
One of the fastest dissolving salts.
Comes in a plastic containers unlike almost all other salts.
Calcium may be high and alk low, but that doesn't matter unless your doing sps or lazy to fix it if u need to.

fastest dissolving is not the point of a good salt. I'd rather have a salt w/all the right levels and have it take a half hour to dissolve (not that it takes that long) rather than get one that takes 2 minutes but doesnt have the right levels...like oceanic.

Not sure how a plastic container makes a difference...

I used it from day one on my current 3.5 years old system and never had any problems. It is high in calcium and low alkalinity but thats easy enough to fix. I did like the fast dissolving part so if I didn't make up water ahead of time it wasn't much trouble to do it spur of the moment. I recently switched to OceanPure from Via Aqua just because I got such a good deal on 3 cases of it and its a little better on calcium and alkalinity. I wouldn't hesitate to use Oceanic again.

I mix IO and Oceanic to get a better chemical balance - I like the high calcium in Oceanic, but the IO seems to balance the alk. a bit better.

That's one of the few salt products I'd actively avoid. The calcium is too high, which is just painful.

I'ld tend to agree, but I can see this salt having lots of potential for heavily established tanks filled with SPS, LPS, and Clams. But for people that are just starting out, or don't have many thriving calcium-using animals, then the product doesn't hold well against other salt brands.
