ora german blue polyp acro not blue?

Hello
I have a german blue that has good green color and great polyp extension but the polyps are not blue. It is a well encrusted coral that is just now starting to put out quite a few 1/2 to 3/4 in branches. Any ideas why there isnt any blue?

I would refer you to a sps color guide but I really dont know how to link it on here the name of the thread issps coloring guide lots of valuable information on there.
 
Thanks, I might need to start dosing small amounts of iodine. Most of my tricolors are not very purple like they should be.

Personally, I don't think this "color guide" means much and I wouldn't try to chase any of those elements or dose anything in the guide in an attempt to enhance colors.

This coral will lighten up and be pale when nutrients are too low or the light is too intense, and will brown out a bit when they're too high. It also seems to require a spot where it's happy light wise in order to get the green base with blue polyps. IME it's a pretty finicky coral and requires some patience to let it grow for a bit before it really starts to color up. If you've had it for 6 months plus and are confident your basic parameters are good then I'd say look to tweak something. Otherwise, if you're confident of the lineage, I would just give it some time and keep your basic parameters in a good range.

What type of lighting are you running and where are you parameters?
 
The German blue polyp is a hardy acro but difficult to keep the polyps colored blue unless your parameters and very stable consistently. Hope that helps.
 
I can vouch for it being a hardy coral. A year ago my phos got so high that I lost 95% of all my sps but just alittle bit of encrusting survived of the german blue and it has now recovered and it starting to send up branches. Are the polyps on the base of this coral blue or mostly the branches? I might be expecting too much too early. Although even before when it was a good size coral I was never able to get the blue to come out.

My experience is different. I used to have two colonies and the colony that was getting blasted from T5's high up was always more pale than the colony on the bottom of the tank. They both did very well and had good color and blue polyps though.
 
I got one about 6 months ago from divers den. It was on an ora plug. I have about 20 different monti that all do great. this german blue polyp did great at the beginning & took off like a weed. I fragged it a few times then it started to go down hill & it fizzled out. I tried raising some pieces & lowering others. The ones I raised to higher light rtn'd. The ones I dropped down didn't do well either & stn'd within a month. Just lost the last frag I had about a month ago.
 
I (and from the title I assume the OP was also) referring to the acropora by this name, not the similarly named montipora.

I bought mine from Battle Corals a couple years ago. Not sure if it's available for fragging, but it's a great piece. I have the acropora, not the montipora. Feel free to PM if you're in Chicago and want a frag.
 
I got a nice frag of the German Blue Acro from Battlecorals a couple of months ago. Its always been one of my favorite acros. Its getting blasted with light - over 400 par MH radium. It has encrusted very well and is starting to throw some branches.
