ORA Oregon Tort growth shots.

This is a picture in my tank of oregon tort from Travis at upscales fish and Reptile of Oregon, importer of the Oregon tort, it has a bit of a two tone look also. I do think there was some talk way back that ora did not get their frag from Upscales. There was One colony split in half and Upscales kept one and another went somewhere else.

James- I need a frag of that one when is gets big enough. I know your corals are on hold for a little while. I will wait no problem.

Hi Toothman,

Wow! That is a very nice colony of Oregon Tort. Thank you for sharing your history as well. I'm always intrigued by the stories behind some of the earlier "LE" corals in the US. Sometimes the history is so complex, an entire episode of "Mythbusters" could be dedicated to a single coral

Warmest Regards,
James

Hi Tom,

No problem. When I do run out of room, and must trim the coral, I will save a piece just for you.

Your very welcome, Basser! Who ever thought Oregon Tort could be so dramatic :)

Here are some pics of some of my other torts:

Wow,Yellow Tort! Very cool.

Nice collection of torts CUNA,

Torts are definitely one my favorites for sure.

I've seen this ORA version in person before and it is definitely a different coral than the non ORA version. ORA's version grows a lot faster too.
I suspect that ORA used the name on purpose, to sell a lot of corals but they didn't want to wait for the real deal original one to grow out enough to produce aquacultured frags.

I think ORA should have called theirs the ORAgon tort.

LOL. Very funny! I could not agree more! Thank you for the kind comment as well. All I need now is a red tort to complete my tort collection. I wonder if it even exists.

CUNAREEFER you have some crazy PE. Just curious what are your tank parameters? I know mine are right but my PE is not like that until the lights are off

CUNAReefer-

Your acro is very nice but does not appear to be Oregon Tort. It looks to be a Cali Tort. This may be due to your lighting and flow but the growth form is also a little off.

If you look at toothman's pic, this is how this coral is supposed to look. Here's another pic for comparison:

FYI- Travis @ Upscales was not the original importer of this coral.

Thank you, Shaun,

I appreciate your feedback. I've read some of your comments on other threads and I'm very happy to have you post here. You definitely know your Oregon Tort. I'm just going to let my little coral grow and post pics every month or so. When I have some updated pics, I'll be sure to send you a PM for your feedback.

Warmest Regards,
James

Travis did not import the original piece but did grow it.

Travis at Upscales is correct
Hello all-

My name is Shaun Monahan and I imported the ORIGINAL Oregon Tort back in late 1998. It was originally a beige color. This is about the time the first 20k 400w Radiums became available, and this (then beige) coral was mounted about 6" from the water line, directly under the 400w 20k Radium in my store's (Waves Marine Aquaria) 150g display. Within a few days this coral started to develop the solid deep blue coloration it's well known for today.

This coral was imported from Bali - NOT the SOLOMONS or any other local- I cannot speak for the "other" torts, and where they've originated from, just this one.

This tort was starting to show some signs of RTN along the base, so Travis and I ended up trading some SPS. Once I fragged my tort, it ended up completely bleaching out then next day. So, Travis thankfully ended up saving this coral, growing it out, and fragging it to sell.

The rest of what Travis stated is correct, and to further clarify we have never been enemies- just very competitive. Also my website was ecorals... And Patrick Monaghan and I are not related.... And Steve Tyree and I used to do a lot of frag trading back in the late 90's....

And I hope this clarifies.

Thanks James, very nice of you to say. Glad I can help out.

Travis did not import the original piece but did grow it.

You are correct toothman - Travis did grow out the 1st pieces and made them available for sale to which Rick (Souta's) then bought them from Travis and grew them out even more. This coral got around very well back then, and it still does to this day.

BTW- nice find on the old OT story... Steve Weast also talked about this on one of his live reef talks- which I believe is still archived here somewhere...

I had to turn my "ORA Oregon" Tort this morning due to the growth on one side of the coral. You can see some of the variation in the coralite structure better in this pic. This side of the Tort was receiving brighter light and does not show the green coloration that the earlier pics I provided do.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Very nice my ora oregon tort is the same with the hint of green and mostly blue, its a fast grower in my tank

Hello Noypi and Paul,

Hope all is well!

Thank you for your comments. The yellow tort came from a local reefer. I'm not sure if there is a "named" version of a yellow tort available. Its a tort that you rarely see. I've only seen it in a couple of tanks.

Warmest Regards,
James

:sad2: If you decide to sell frags put me on the list.
