In either case, they probably won't fare well in any tank...
not true, IME & IMO.
Survivability of these seastars all has to do with the collection, transport and acclimation techniques involved. If handled correctly and the aquarium is large enough (offers enough natural fare) these stars can do fine for many years.

True, many Linckia and Fromia are lost during the process of being imported and their inevitable demise is time delayed (so a star that may appear fine is actually already doomed), but to say they won't fare well in any tank is just not true.

There's many people in my area keeping Linckia and Fromia.

I had it for 8 months. Just brought in some new livestock. One minute it was under a coral and two minutes later it was in pieces. I am guessing since the area looked burned, is what happened to it. It was always very active day or night.

are you saying the star was shipped in with some (damp) liverock?

And the ones that do manage to survive transport and initial conditions such as acclimatization, they die within aboug 18 months. Some survive, but the percent is minuscule and probably not worth purchasing (and thus encouraging vendors to stock, even though they're doomed).

I bought a beautiful orange Linkia from SaltwaterFish.com.

I shouldn't have done it. I did a stupid thing and bought him before I did any reading on him.

I acclimated him according to directions......and within 3 days he was a pile of orange mush at the bottom of my tank. I was horrified. I felt so guilty for doing this to this guy.

Really......if these guys aren't expected to have a good long life, I wish that they would just leave them in the ocean and not even sell them. :-(

I had mine for six months. This week it worked it's way into my pistol shrimps lair and ended up in pieces. I bought it through Vivid Aquariums. It seemed much hardier than the blue linkia.

I have both a blue linkia, and an orange...( thought it to be a linkia) I have had good luck with both .. the blue is in a150 with about 300# live rock, 5 damsels 2 gobies, and various coral, a skimmer and a sump. Its been there about 6 months.. and has worked its way around every cranny in the rock, tank sides and around corals. Very showy, prefers shaded areas. I got the orange from a dealer who tried to frag it by taking off 4 arms.. took it home and put it in a 24g with no sump or skimmer, only calerpia, and some slime algae.. It has been there 3 months, and is regenerating the arms.. seems just fine :) Not sure what the life span is for Linkia, but if you cant feed them, they surely will starve.. I have mostly green corralin, with some hair algae in both tanks, although I also have growing purple coraline in both tanks. I dont see either on the sand much, so my guess : they eat bacteria or protists associated with the algae.. ? anyone know for sure ?

Hope you have luck with yours.. :)

The one that I had was doing fine as long as I had some hair algae. I took steps to do away with that, and when I did, he went looking in the pistol shrimp lair. End of story for him.
