Orange Shoulder Tang - Skin discolouration

rockworm

A-counting guy
I picked up an Orange Shoulder Tang (Acanthurus olivaceus) last Friday. It is in a 29g long quarantine tank. As usual, the fish was a little skittish when he was placed in the q tank, so I placed a single piece of live rock in the tank. This rock is slightly concave on the bottom and he would try to lay on his side under it. He finally managed to get under the rock. I assumed he scratched himself and that this led to a single dark spot on his right side. I removed the rock figuring this would stop any further scrapes. However, over the past couple days, the spots appeared at the junction between the tail and the body (both sides) and then on his left side.

The fish is eating well and is neither lethargic nor breathing erratically. I know he will change color from yellow to a grayish color as he matures, but I expected a gradual color shift, not a blotchy change.

I have scoured the Internet trying to find a similar issue and I cannot find anything. I don't want to do prophylactic treatment where I don't know the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds/looks like a cut that got infected and now the infection has spread. Best bet would be to use a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Furan-2 or Kanaplex (or even both used concurrently for maximum effectiveness).

It looks like an aggressive, nasty infection (which typically means gram negative) so I would act fast.

Thanks Humblefish. I was thinking infection, but did not know what to look for. I will get this done right away.
