Ordering clams

After alot of reading I am about ready to purchase my first clam. I will more than likely have to order due to lfs not having them. With the cold weather, is it safe to ship this time of year? or should I wait until it warms up?

Thanks,
Jeff

Well most places that ship clams know how to pack them and add heat packs..

But IMO, I would wait until spring..

I am debating on buying at a store in Oklahoma City, an hour and a half for me. They only have 1 clam. It has a blue mantle with some strange striations, I have no idea what type it is. Very nice colors I think. What do I need to look for as in a "healthy" clam? It is open nicely under their 175 MH. Whenever I moved my hand under the light, the mantle seemed to close a little, this is a good sign right? It is about 3 to 3 1/2 inches across.

Have you read the book "Giant Clams" by Daniel Knop. If not, I highly recommend reading it before purchasing a clam.

The first 4 clams, I every had died because I was miss informed. The book is a great guide to keeping clams. After reading the book from cover to cover twice. I have not lost another clam.

First, how old is your tank?? What type of lighting do you have?? What are your water parameters??
