He can smack you in the finger and it will hurt and probably bleed.

There is some information about trapping them. You probably want to get him out before you recieve part two as he will love to eat some of your hermit crabs and snails.

The local shrimpers here call them "Thumb-splitters" for good reason!
Never handle a mantis without thick gloves!

The 2 mantis I had would smash rocks, crack shells from hermit crabs and snails for food. Take the time to get them out.

Thanks for the information on the mantis. I also read the great information that Richard has at the TBS website (Animals you May Want to Remove ). I have confirmed that I have at least 2 mantis. I will try to trap them. I have known from the beginning where one of the mantis lives. I put the bated trap in the tank and drew out the second more colorful mantis. He ran across the entire length of the tank. Neither has gone near the trap yet.

The tank is really quite beautiful. I am very impressed with the rock. I think I will stick to the Gulf biotype. I just need to figure out what reef safe fish I can get that come from the area. There are no fish in the TBS price list. Are there any fish that you sell Richard?

Still sitting at .2 ammonia

Mantis number one. Notice how photogenic he is.

I believe this is a Porcelain.

My tank room, and many other members outstanding tanks, made it into this months Reefkeeping Magazine ReefSlides. Too bad mine was void of any life when the picture was taken:strooper:

Red_Six,

I don't think most of us had much luck in getting the mantis with traps but we done well using the tool from Sears:

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...=00941322000&vertical=AUTO&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

In case the link doesn't work this is the part #:
Sears item #00941322000 Mfr. model #41322

Good luck!

btw--those are great pictures and I've to check with my friend to borrow his camera but not sure which he have and if I remember that came out about 3 yrs ago.

I have had my camera for about 4 1/2 years.

I may have to get and extractor. I would rather not injure any of the mantis or crabs trying to remove them; although I would not mind if the mantis went around eating all of the crabs:) I will try the trap for a while.

Here are a few Tunicates. I never heard of them before I got my rock but I have to say I like the way they look a lot. I have seen about 6 different colors but most are small or at odd angles and hard to photograph.

BTW I must have been to the TBS web site 1000 times but I just notice the cool effect of the TBS logo on the main page. Click the logo and drag your mouse around. Nice touch.

I found this little guy swimming around the tank quite deftly, and then he landed on the glass so I could take a photo. First time I have seen anything like this one. Perhaps someone can identify it. The white dots at its sides are actually appendages that end in curls.

Here are just a couple of random shots. Notice the brittle star in the first photo.

Very nice pictures!! Man, I remember how excited I was when I got part one of my TBS. Part two will look even better!!

I recently got a complate dual 250W metal halide setup for free and I am seriously thinking about going up to a 110 Long for my classroom :)

I decided to take some photos of the macro algae on my TBS rock. The macro seemed to be the most stressed from the shipping but it is coming back fine. I personally really like all the different types of macro you get with the TBS rock. I figure once I get a clean up crew and a few fish, the macro will be naturally pruned.

where did the rock you are using come from?

Straight from the TBS web site, "Tampa Bay Saltwater is home of the largest Live Rock Farm in the world! We have over four million pounds of live rock under production on a five acre lease site in the Gulf of Mexico, and an Aquaculture site located in the Florida Keys." I believe my rock came from the Gulf of Mexico.

For those interested, Part 2 should arrive by weeks end.

Correct information about phosphates in live rock is here

http://www.reeferrocks.com/liverock/history.htm

Florida cultured live rock has the least amount of phosphates of ANY live rock in the industry!
