I had that same stuff for a really long time, and I ended up getting a TON of Blue Reef Hermits as a last resort, and they actually just tore through it. Dont know if it will work for you guys, but it did for me.

I'm trying a GFO reactor right now. We will see if it works in a week or so.

GSX. I'm using a phosban reactor with Phosban. The reactor has been in use for ~2yrs. I don't think the reactor will help with this particular problem i.e. the brown fuzzy hairballs. Post if it helps.
