Orphek LED Lighting?

I think orphek are loosing money for every unit thy sell

Why do you think that? No one knows what LED's they are using, so they might be inferior. The certifications lead me to believe the power supplies etc are of good quality, but these units are assembled in Hong Kong. $500 for an LED system is cheap, but these are not very large, most would need several. I am leary of any product that seems to be a bargain, is from an unknown company and is assembled in China (basically).

You guys will rate anything other than Cree as 'inferiour' with no real engineering basis other than a bunch of reef guys who think they're electrical engineers. I guess that means if it's using Rebels or Seouls or Nichia's or Bridgelux it must suck then......I'll be sure to inform their shareholders that Cree is superior cuz y'all say so.

I have a couple problems with this light already though. First, the specs are entirely goofy:

LED Qty:60pcs combines 76% of White LEDS and 23% of Blue LEDs,
Color: White Led 16.000k 160lm,
Wavelength: Blue 450nm - 460nm,

So, where's that remaining 1% going? Next, who really makes a 16k emitter at 160lumens? The fixture says it's using 60LEDs but not using 180watts, so they aren't being run at a full 3watts. So, the specs on the White LEDs can't be real unless they're running high end emitters, which is doubtful.

Next, the spacing of the blue LEDs will insure 'disco' color problems if it's not raised real high.

Last, if the light is running a 75/25 mix of white to blue then PAR won't be very competitive.

If you are referring to my comment blasterman, I said they "might" be inferior because no one knows what they are. And FWIW, my diploma does say something about electrical engineering....
Anyway, there is no telling until someone buys one of these and does some real world testing.

To chimmike

To chimmike

chimmike I tested led aquarium even before you was exist here .!!!
The only problem that I have is that I not speak English well.

I am not new , i change my name but this is other story.

I emailed Orphek and got the exact same email that ledme got....I'm leary though because they have NO pictures of their fixture over a tank. I've been looking at the fixture for over a month, you'd figure they'd take some kind of picture. Especially when you figure I'd be buying 4 of them @ $1650, should deserve something to make me feel warm and fuzzy about the fixture.

ledme- I looked through your posts, and on 6/25 you said you ordered an Orphek light. How's that working out for you?

That's one way to participate in this discussion. Perhaps not the best though.

As far as I can tell from my research and talking to the company....No one has bought one of them yet, yet another reason to be weary.

Why? His comment was completely valid. There are plenty of companies making LEDs that are just as nice as the Crees, and yet people assume that anything else is crap.

Hey - if you want to buy a fixture with LED's of unknown origin, put your money where your moth is. You be the guinea pig, you rip apart the fixture, and you can inform the world what emitters these fixtures use. Cree LED's are proven performers (as are some of the others mentioned, such as Luxeon) - they are brighter than the competition, they do not need to be replaced after a year and a half, and they are making and developing the most efficient emitters out there.

ANY reputable manufacturer of aquarium LED lights should have absolutely no problem telling you what emitters they use... it is precisely because Orphek is unwilling to release this quite important detail about their fixture, that it appears to me they may be trying to hide possible cheap/unreliable/inferrior/short-lived componentry they they have utilized in their product.

I am buying into LED's for the cost savings - this includes lower energy usage, lack of heat, and NO BULB REPLACEMENTs for 50k hrs. This is why I think Simi LED's and other similar cheap LED's are inferior. I'll gladly pay more for a Cree emitter that has been tested to run for 50k hrs with insignificant luminous decay if kept cool. Emitters that I will know I will have to replace in 1.5 yrs defeat the purpose for me. Just IMO.

No, I didn't at all. Sometimes people need to be called out for making assumptions.
Yes, you did. The reason I posted here is because of a discussion that you cant see regarding this user's tone while posting on this website. The reason I posted that comment was because I called him out for belittling people and disregarding their views. I didn't post that comment because I assumed anything about his knowledge of LED's or his love or hatred of a certain brand of LEDs.
The fact that you and I have had problems in the past for basically the same thing is, I'm sure, the reason you wrote that towards me. Don't think I haven't forgotten Rich lol. Along with helping others out around here and enjoying the hobby like you, I have a responsibility to this website that you are not involved in. That is why I posted what I did.
Have a good one Rich. Let's not distract anymore.

CREE LEDs have been proven to be the best LEDs in terms of cost to light ratio and power efficiency. This isn't saying the Rebels, Bridgelux, and Seoul LEDs are necessarily bad, they're just not the best.

I didn't got yet the light when i will got it i will post picture and test on my corals

has anybody even seen any other pic of this fixture than the one floating in every forum??? is it real??? is the company real??? no pics of tanks, no par tests, no real users... send one to reef builders dot com for review, I am sure we'll all feel much better after that!

knowing what you know today about this company and taking everything they are telling us about the fixture as fact and take money out of the equation.... how many of you will buy this fixture, I am really worried I am sending my $$$ into a black hole! it really is my only concern.
