oscillating saw to frag?

Has anyone tried using one of those new oscillating saws to frag?

I thought it might be a good tool with the smooth flat blade on it - it would limit tearing. I used one to cut through some hardwood and it went through like butter so I think it would do quite well on lps coral skeleton like acan.

Ya this kind of saw is totally different through.. its basically a flat blade that oscillates back and forth. I thought it would be more razor like and you could frag it underwater in theory which would reduce burning and mess.

I was hoping someone tried it already before I lay down the $100-150.

I have one of those and the end vibrates like mad, I got mine for about 100 bucks to cut door jambs for my wood floors. Would you use the wood/metal cutting tip? I guess it could cut through rock and stuff. I think they make a tile cutting tip too which may work. Just for cutting chunks and straight cuts I think you may be able to pull it off. Like you said , the tip is a few inches long so you could frag the coral underwater in a tupperware container or something.

I used to use a dremel but lost alot of frags ( especially brains) to heat and damage plus I couldnt get the precision cuts i needed. I now use a Reefkeeper frag saw and cut through corals like butter, I can even cut single heads out of a colony and never lose one.

Good luck

I have a dremel but it makes an absolute mess, and I dont have a band saw, quite pricey for a wet one. I cant believe no one has tried the oscillating saw yet. You could definitely cut under water in a shallow pan!

Sorry for reviving and old thread, but I was about to start one with the exact same question. Has anyone tried this?

I am curious about it for making plunge cuts on rock in a shallow tank. I've been fragging off mushrooms lately with a screwdriver and wonder if this might be a cleaner approach. I've used these to cut plastic tail lights open without harming the bulb inside (forensics), but no longer have access to one I could test this with.

I have used both, had better luck with the dremel, the oscillating tool I got from harbor freight is to big and bulky. I can get more precision cuts with my dremel.
