Osmolator mounting question (w/pics)

I'm setting up my new sump w/ Osmolator and would like to verify that I picked the best location and have the sensors mounted correctly. I have the sensors on the single rail mounting. The baffles are 12", 14" and 8" to the return area.
Return area is 20x15", pump is Eheim 1262. Tank is 180g.

Bottom optical sensor is upside down.

Yup, the wire should come out the top, with the optical sensor pointing down. (pointy end down)

Thanks, I'll reverse the bottom optical sensor.
I'm assuming sump water level will normally be around 13" since the leading baffle is 12".

What height should the float sensor be at?
Since I'm mounting the single rail to the 14" middle baffle, I would probably need to use the 2nd rail as an extension to get the float 14"-16".

What height should the optical sensor be?
I would consider 9-10" would be the minimum Low water level in the return area, the rest of the sump would be around 13".

Thanks for any assistance, this sump design and top off is new for me.

What height should the float sensor be at?

Think of it this way, what is the highest water level you can keep so that when the power goes off, that your sump does not overflow, just below that level.

What height should the optical sensor be?

I would keep this one high enough to where your return pump won't suck air but low enough to keep some space between your High cut out.


It's easy enough to change, so play with it some. There is no "set" level since all sumps/refugiums are different.

How did you get the socks to stay attached the pipes?

In the picture of the entire sump, the Berlin filter socks look like they are attached to the 2" PVC from above. Normally I think they make acrylic brackets to hold them. There is a plastic piece within these socks, and I think reef_doug may have figured out a way to attach to that plastic piece.

I have a glass sump and I've been trying to figure out how to hang them. Currently I have mine supported from the bottom with 4" pvc drainage pipe. I cutout a section of the pipe, but it's not working very well.

Thanks for welcoming me to RC. I've received a ton of helpful information on this site over the past several months. I just received a new Osmolator yesterday, so I was checking out Roger's forum for ideas. I don't want to highjack this thread, but that's one of the nicest sumps I've seen...and I'm desperate to fix my filter socks.

The sock holders were part of the custom designed sump by SoCal Creations. You can get hang on acrylic 4" sock mounts at MD or other online dealers. The 1-1/2" pipe is cut in an angle and is inserted about 4". It just hangs on the socks. The Wyee fitting allows air to escape at the top and the "cross tube" is like a bar to lift both at the same time to enable the easy changing of socks and adds a bit of rigidity to the two drains.

So are the socks supported by an acrylic bracket in your sump, or do the socks hang on the 1-1/2" pipe?

Also, I took your idea to hang the osmolator sensors on the baffle. Ironically I did this last night after first forgetting to turn off my RO and dropping my SG to 1.015...close one.

Socks are supported by bracket. 1-1/2" tube just sticks in them.
