OT: A little bit of diving for anyone who would like to join

NeveSSL

Got tubes?
Hi all!

I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to (need to clear using the equipment with my instructor first), but I'm pretty sure I should be able to go diving at Martha's on Sept. 14th and Sept. 28th. :)

If anyone would like to join me, let me know.

I have class at Martha's on those days, but only for 2 or 3 dives so I should be able to get my tanks refilled and do at least another 2 dives in the evening. I'm not 100% sure when my class will be finished, but we'll be there and probably in the water by 10AM so I don't think it would be past 2 or 3 by the time we got done.

Again, I'm going to double check with my instructor, but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be a problem!

Just let me know if you're interested.

Just like normal you'll have to bring your own gear and remember to buy passes to Martha's from an LDS where its only $20 as opposed to $30 at the gate. :)

Wellp, today I was informed that Martha's may be closed on the 14th. We're not sure just yet. They are supposed to be doing some blasting of some sort.

I'll update this thread as soon as I hear whats going on, but I have no idea when that will be. :)

Brandon

I'm not sure, Chris, but that would be a logical explanation.

I'll see if I can find out. :)

Seems more logical that they would blast on a weekday, which I can only imagine is less busy. Of course, logic and reason does not always win.

OK, a couple of updates.

We ended up not going to Martha's this weekend because its closed.

Why is it closed? My instructor said that a company still has contractual rights to the rock in the quarry and are wanting to get some out of it for building a new road. I have no idea if the owners of Martha's are trying to fight them on this or if they're complying and its taking some time to get the rock.

We did, however, go to Jeff's quarry which was a cool dive. Its nowhere near as big as Martha's, but it was free. :) Its not open to the public, though. However, I'm pretty sure I can get in, so if you'd like to join me for a day of diving there, let me know. There's a bus you can go through on the bottom (ask me how I know :D ), a sailboat, and several cars (stolen cars from back in the day... including an El Camino) throughout. Its still a fun dive, however it is a COLD dive! I'll have very specific dive profiles tomorrow when my data cable comes in for my new dive computer. :) Ultimately, the third thermocline is at about 63 degrees according to my computer, and that hurts. ;)

Big news, though, for anyone who can. We have a big trip coming up down to Panama City. I think we're doing at least 7 dives over 3 days, including a wreck dive and a dive to an old bridge that was sunk for a diving attraction. We will also be doing dives at Vortex Springs and possibly Morrison Springs if its open (currently being renovated after changing ownership twice).

The greatest part is that this is a GREAT trip for those of us on a budget. Especially if you'd like to carpool with Julie and myself. :)

I am not sure how much this would cost for a person exactly, but here is what I do know:

My cost for the diving is $290. This includes AOW cert fees so I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper for those of you just going to dive.

Also, as far as lodging goes, I'll be staying at the Vortex campground for pretty cheap. I'll also be eating at said campground for cheap as well (Nathan's hotdogs over the fire... I honestly like it as much as a steak :D ).

If you have any questions and/or are interested in going, let me know. :)

OH! Almost forgot dates: We'll be going down there on Friday, October 10th, diving Vortex Springs on Saturday, Morrison Springs on Sunday, the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, and returning on Tuesday. Just FWIW, Julie and I are considering coming back home through Atlanta to check out the Aquarium on Tuesday. Makes sense to me, anyway. :)

I think that about covers it. Again, let me know if you have any questions and I'll also work on getting some solid costs. FWIW, maximum dive depths for the trip will probably be around 90ft... not too bad. :)

The panhandle trip is a good one.....you'll have fun:) I think that bridge is #14. It's pretty cool.

Whew....Jeff's is cold and vis is terrible. It was 53 below the thermocline last time I was there.....at 12 feet! That stinks that Martha's is still closed.

Chris

I'm excited about the trip, Chris! And not so much excited about the prospect of possibly having to go to Jeff's again... it was quite cool. Not 53, thankfully, but 63 is cold enough for me. ;)

Wish you could come, too, Michael. :)

Brandon

I'm pretty sure you don't know the definition of cold until the bottom of your zipper leaks during a dry suit dive in 38 degree water... that's right... the bottom... if you get my drift :)

Brian and I will be doing some diving Sunday at around 1PM or so.

Not sure where just yet... if Martha's is open, we'll be there. If not, we'll be at a private quarry in Murfreesboro. :)

Just PM me if you're interested!
