OT- any ATV enthusiasts here?

I'm thinking about buying a new ATV and can't decide whether to get a sport model or a 4X4 model. I will not be doing any racing, just weekend warrior riding.

I like Yamahas so I am considering their Raptor 700 or one of their 4X4 models. Any tips or suggestions?

I would suggest a true sport quad for rec. riding yamaha yfz450
or honda trx450. Both great bikes for sport/rec riding as well as with minor mods can be raced and they resell much better than most because they are good for both. raptor 700 is a good quad, but you dont need a 700cc to have fun and the 450's above will be better in most places and faster than the 700 as well as less weight. I am into dirtbikes now,but owned 30+ 4 wheelers and for weekend riding, get a sport bike and not a big bulky 4wd or utility. They handle horrible and if you get in a tough spot you will not want them on top of you !
Also if you like the raptor, I have a buddy selling an 04 660 raptor that was rode maybe 3-4 times.

once my arm got caught on a rope being pulled by a honda 4w something... it was green. and it pulled me by the arm for about 30 seconds till the mental drive (a brother of mine) stopped.

thats about all i know

I have been wanting to get into it again myself. I am wanting a Honday 450R they seem really reliable and great all around bikes. You can find 04-05s used for 3k already too!

i have the new yamaha wolverine 450 and love it,it goes through anything,i added 26" itp tires and wheels and i can climb a tree if needed,if your looking for a utility bike then go with a grizzly, but if you want the best of both worlds get the wolvy.

First thing I would suggest doing is determine how much you can spend. I own both a Yamaha Grizzly and a Yamaha Raptor 660. If you are looking at a sport bike I would go to the dealer and sit on one. Get the feel of one. If your a bigger guy the 450's might be a little small for you. Honda 450 vs. Yamaha 450 are neck and neck but I belive the Honda doesn't come with electric start. I also believe that both 450s don't have a reverse gear. Something to think about. I've seen alot of 450s beat raptor 700/660s hands down. One thing to remember is all that it takes is more money to go fast. As far as the utilitiy atv they can be just as fun but thay are heavier than sport atvs. Most are automatic, which can be nice. If you want to spend the cash @$9000, then you might look at Can-Am atvs (formerly Bombardier). Can - Am has a new 800 sport/utility atv with 4x4 capability and can give some sport bikes a run for their money. After saying all that it will all come down to you. If you ride aggressively I wold go for a sport bike you won't be disappointed. I've babbled on long enough.... If you have anymore questions give me a shout. Another tip if you every get up towards Farmington you need to go to St. Joe State Park. You will have fun there with what ever atv you buy.

true,st joe is great we go every weekend it seems

I was there friday and sunday. Was a muddy mess!

I have a Polaris 2005 500 HO and a 2006 Artic Cat 650 EFI V-Twin. Both are great Utility 4wd. The polaris is more nimble in the tight trail riding but the power of the AC is second to none. I like the 4wd on the Polaris alot better. I tip the scales right at 200lbs. and reach a top speed on the polaris of 58 mph. The AC is almost 70. The AC feels real "light" on the front end and not as near a planted feeling like on the Polaris. The Polaris feels more like a sport ATV and the AC is a stump puller.

Lets go riding......... I wanna ride...I wanna ride... I think that's how the commercial goes.

chad give me a call man were going again this weekend,we were there with 4 sport quads standing up and my bike was on the front.

You could of atleast said hi :D There was only 300-400 people there. Im actually going snowmobling in wyoming/montana this weekend, been waiting 2 years to go back.

My in-laws live in Farmington so we get there quite a bit. I'm sure we will get up there more if I buy two quads. Most of the riding here around Cape will be more suited to a 4X4 so I'm leaning in that direction. Like I said, I'm a Yamaha guy so I'm really considering the Wolverine or the Grizzly. I'm a big guy at about 260 so I need all the power I can get. I'm just not sure about the auto trannies. Never owned a bike with an automatic so I need to ride one and see how I like it. Seems that most of the manufacturers are going with automatics.

Of course I love speed but I don't want to get a rocket and find that I can't traverse the terrain with my buddies on 4X4's.

Oh well, shopping is half the fun I guess.

Where do you suggest looking in the St. Louis area? I have been talking to Holzhauers in Nashville, IL. They seem to have a great selection and good pricing. Any others?

Look at procycle in columbia Mo. I got my bike brand new for $2500 less than any dealer was selling them for. They run specials in different papers, etc . They are usually from factory auctions and most likely came in with damaged crates, but bikes are fine with no damage and you can inspect them before you buy obviously. Great way to save a bunch of $ and get what you want.

You can do a search for Procycle on the net they do have a web site. If I remember correctly it's procycleusa.com . They have dealerships both in Columbia and Springfield MO. I can tell you that you won't be disappointed if you buy the grizzly. All the power you need. Also when it is locked in all around it is a true 4x4 all wheels turning. I have an 04' model so it's only a 660. It tops out around 64 mph and rides like a cadilac ( independant suspension all around). People argue all day about independant suspension vs solid axel, saying that the grizzly feels tippy but I don't see it that way. Other riding spots in MO that I've been to are Chadwick and Finger Lakes. Chadwick is in Ava, 30 miles south of Springfield. Excellent rinding area especially if you like the technical/ extreme stuff. I had a grown man breakdown and cry there. Good for dirt bikes too. Finger lakes, I went once and won't go back. The trails were so dug out because of atvs with oversized tires I felt like I was on a train track. They do have a motorcross track there that seemed half way decent. We got a lot of stares when riding the track with a yamaha grizzly and a kawasaki prarie. Babbling again must stop.

So whats the hold up ??????:D

they are a little higher than a frag :D

otherwise I'd have two!

Checked out the Grizzly 660 today. It looks like a top notch ATV. Holzhauers quoted me a pretty good price without me even haggling. I'll check out ProCycle as well.

How does everyone feel about the automatic transmissions? Any problems with them?
