Im trying to put a new version of Norton Anti-Virus software onto my laptop and I keep getting a prompt to delete the old norton stuff off my computer in order to install the new stuff.

The old stuff is set as read only and wont let me disable it in order to delete it, so I keep getting a message saying that I cannot delete it because it is in use.

If I disable it in the task bar it re-enables itself instantly after clicking anywhere else on the laptop. Is there anyway to get around that or make the PC delete a file even though it is "in use" ????

I would not recommend just ending the process......you might do irreparable damage. I would go to your control panel and add/remove programs. Remove the program from there. That would be the right way to do it.

Well I was able to delete a few more of the files but still cant delete the main folder..... One folder wont delete with a file named 0575NAV~.TMP ???

I tried deleting it from the add/remove programs list but it doesnt even show up on that list..... IF I search the C: drive I find it under the PROGRAM FILES / SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS tab though....

What is your email address? I have an app I got from Symantec called NoNav. Basically, it strips every little piece of Norton off your system. IIRC it's pretty small so I should be able to email it to you. If not I'll set up a TFTP server and you can download it.

I have no nav also. It takes a while to run, but it does a good at cleaning up any left behind symantec files.

You may not have been able to delete/remove the app, because I believe SAV runs as a service. If you where to disable the service, that should have prevented it from re-launching thus you should be able to remove it via the add/remove programs.

Norton is a horrible AV software period. Their corporate version is good but consumer version is a just steamy pile of ****. There are a bunch of free Anti Virus softwares available to download. Keep the Norton off the PC and load either

Avira or

AVG

i got avg with my new computer, the free version. Idle it takes about 2-5% off my RAM (3 gigs) on windows vista. Norton uses a lot more computing power and memory and really slows down your computer.

I like AVG & have used it for 10 years sucessfully. Never once had a virus!

sorry to hijack but puffer, do we need to register or anything or is it just download and update? just tried it today after doing some searching and all i can say is it is looking better than my mcafee :p

Download the Norton remover

Download the Norton remover

You can download a removal tool from the symantec website. That should remove the old version so you can install the new version

Finally, a subject I feel I can talk about.
Norton uninstaller is best.
You could also try to delete locked files by booting up in safe mode. AVG is awesome and free.
You should find and stop the "mother" service when processes autostart after stopping them.
And I need to mention the best Windows recovery tool to come along in a long time, UBCD for windows, ubcd4win.com, and yes it is completely free. It takes a long time to work since you are booting from CD but the GUI is based on Windows. It is for PC fix-it types and not for the average user though. Best to use when you just want to boot up your PC to get to your files when Windows isn't working because of any issue under the sun like viruses, hardware damage, accidental deletes...

Be sure to check your start up file...lots of little nasties like to hide there and when your computer is rebooted, they restart themselves...I also hate Symantec...took forever to get every little trace of them off of my computer...once I had it off the start up and registry it was easier to get rid of.
