OT - Anyone else do vintage car racing or have a porsche-914?

artful-dodger,

Here are some pics of my nightmare:

"Not legal for SCCA, but okay for PCA...not sure about RMVR."

In my understanding of SCCA ( and the GCR rules ) chassis stiffening IS allowed, but NOT tying the roll cage into the suspension towers in all clubs ( some have different exceptions ).

In fact, I see pics of MAJOR chassis stiffening going on in lots of SCCA 914s, ( including rollcage tie-ins ) just not vintage.

What club were you racing? I recall you were referenced in the "Brad Mayeur Long Kit" installation thread somewhere.

I also hear that there is a Porsche graveyard somewhere near me in the Longmont/Loveland are, but I have not been able to find it.

There are a bunch of old rusted out Porsches on Arapahoe near where I work in Boulder. Not sure what kind of shop it is or if there are 914 bodies. Let me know if you want me to recon for you.

jpc763,

I work in Boulder ( On Arapahoe & Foothills ) as well.

Let me know where they are & I'll go have a look.

Thanks!

Stu

thats funny. have you been a customer there? Those guys are the most condescending *%$!holes i have ever encountered. I dare you to tell them anything that YOUR car may/may not need. report back.

I got the impression they were jerks, but at the time that was typical as I worked through a dealership. Independents never really cared for us to begin with. I took everything with a grain of salt, and assumed they were probably better on the consumer end.

Stu, gl with the new project. Looks like you'll have your hands full for some time =)

spstimie,

Thanks, I have been talking with that person.
The car has sat for 10 years so I am positive the battery tray area will be wasted.

Otherwise it looks good.

I have found a couple others in the $3000 range I am eyeing.
AND some really nice deals, but I cringe at having to fly to portland OR & driving back to save $1000

they treat real customers bad too. my neighbor just got a 75' 911 that had a 3.0 upgrade. the service advisor was really rude and condescending to him thinking that he had a POS 2.7L engine in it. made a big deal about how big of a POS he just bought and kind of rubbed it in his face. the owner of the shop Bob, came out and looked at the car. noticed that it was upgraded. told my neighbor that he wanted $900 just to look it over and do things to it that i am sure he wasnt even sure it "needed". my neighbor was like, " can you just look it over for a couple hours of shop time and tell me what it needs?" the guy freaked out and told him to not dare try to work on this yourself, you dont know anything blah, blah, blah. i thought that was a littel uncalled for. since i am a euro tech myself, i always let the customer take it, dont make them feel like dorks and get the work after they butcher it. makes for a lot better relationship in the longrun. plus, i can charge what it is really going to take to fix it then.

Yeah, Stu, that looks like a whole lot of fun (Me, I just write checks...)

Rules may have changed with SCCA...but most likely just a difference in class. I was trying to stay in a production class for both Solo II and club racing at the time...too long ago to even remember the details.

I thought my old GCR might be around, but I think it is still in my gear bag which is in the trailer...6 miles away at the moment.

I'm attending a conference at DU next weekend, so I'll just have to go vroom-vroom to myself during breaks. I think my season is over except for another PCA D.E. on 10/17-18 at HPR and autocross on 10/24.

artful-dodger,

Yeah I was hoping to stay within the RMVR spec ( 72 GCR + some exceptions ) so I could stay with the other "purists" ( keeps the cost down somewhat )

However, while looking at all my options ( flares, huge wheels, 915 trannies, etc. ) I find it hard to restrain myself to such things when they are very cheap right now.

I'll have to catch you at one of those future races. ;-)

Oh, and the place on east Arapahoe would be Car-Quip. Lots of P-parts but usually pretty expensive. (But probably better than ordering from Automobile Atlanta since you can see what you're getting...)

I saw that one too... very nice but I would feel guilty painting it willow green.

I am trying to keep the next one I get under $3000.
I am eying two others in the denver area while trying to make a decision.

If I was willing to bring one from CA, I would have a ton of choices.

Check out this deal:

I asked if it is still avail, but havent heard back yet.

"I was wondering what you mean by this. Is it a frame problem?"

Yes, the "longerons" are the boxes on either side of the car that provide the stiffness.

The ones on the car I just bought were all rusted out & some previous owner did a terrible job of trying to fix them.

It is not even worth trying.

The Chicago one was a closed auction (ended over the weekend) for an original 914/6 plus a roller body. No bids at $10,000. Beyond your target spend but easily worth $30K or more if done properly. (And assuming the auction description was all accurate.)
