Well I finally was able to pick up a few additions to my home security systems.:uzi: I have been doing a little research on what you need for a carry permit, which is new to me as when I was in the Navy my green card worked for it. But I noticed that you have to have a class so I was wondering does anyone know where to get the class cheap? I was hoping I could "test out" as I think it would be a waste of time if you just learn how to shoot.

Also what are the transport laws here? in case out locked in trunk or glovebox?

Yes.

You have to take a course (Average is 100 bucks) and is offered by most gun stores. Guns and Leather in Hendersonville is probably the best place, but for those in the boro On Target also pffers them. Other ranges have it as well.

Once you take the course, you then bring your certificate to DMV ( not an express office) and file your application...then you wait.

you can't "test out"...part of the law requires you to do 8hrs total...4 hrs of classroom instruction & then 4hrs you do your shooting qualifacations too. once you pass that, you take your certificate to the DMV as said & fill out the application

i know when i took it years ago, the class averaged $75-100 & the actual permit was $100 & it was good for 4 years i think....

here is the TN Dept of Safety website concearning the law & requirements:
http://www.state.tn.us/safety/handgunmain.htm

this organization has been instrumental in gettting the legislation passed & then some meaningful ammendments to the law since:
http://www.legallyarmed.com/
here is a list of the certified schools & some more on the law:
http://www.legallyarmed.com/tnpermitschools.html

if i'm not mistaken, there is a gun show in franklin this weekend & they should be there & several gun ranges that offer the class are usually there as well

yep...just checked...feb 14th & 15th:
Williamson County Agriculture Expo Park, 4215 Long Lane, Franklin TN

Last time I checked On Target in M'boro, the course was like $98 I think. When I checked was around last November and the classes was all booked up til the next year.

I haven't checked lately but I'm also interested in gettin' a permit. I have just been thinkin' about a new hobby. Woudn't mind doin' some target practice.

Well I was going to set up some targets in the back yard to play with I got to get some ammo first. Maybe we could have a good ol bbq and shooting gallery going on some time :) see how fast the sheriff will take getting out there. Ricky you could come play also :)

:D

James is correct, there is no test and you cannot test out.

Guns and Leathger was $65.00 when I checked a few months ago. Was the cheapest I found.

Wayne when you have it in a car you can carry it loaded where ever you want it in the car after you get the permit. (Mine would be in arms reach) Also when you carry it out somewhere just make sure its concealed then. Also from what I can remember you cant carry a gun into a bank or anywhere alcohol is served. I have seen some idiots carry their gun not concealed in public. Im thinking your an idiot if I was a bad guy going to rob a place youd be the firast one I shot to make sure I got away. Just my two cents worth on the subject.

Or school property...government building....or anywhere that it is clearly posted.

What is funny about goverment building is that the capital has a metal dector as you go in but with a govt id you don't have to stop if it goes off. I would think some of the state employees would be more likly to go postal in the plaza befor joe the citizen.

What I was wondering is where can I transport the gun without the permit?:uzi:

Maybe we could bring our toys to the next meeting.......I'm sure Angela wouldn't mind us slipping into her back yard......

There's a place in Murfreesboro, Wayne, that is only $75 and seems to be really good. I'll find a link. TNGunOwners.com is a great place to get some of this info and several MTRC members hang out there, too. :)

Actually Tennessee is not a "concealed" carry state. The problem is that let's say you carry in your waist band. You bend over and your shirt rides up and someone sees your piece. It's not concealed anymore now is it? In concealed carry states if someone sees it, you are in violation of the law and can be cited. Although the majority of Tennessee Permit Holders carry their weapon concealed, it is not mandated in the Tennessee codes that a handgun must be concealed.

Wayne if you mean in your car. You can carry it anywhere you want aslong as the gun and bulletts are kept in different places that you cant reach at the same time. IMO concealed period. If its like some people Ive seen carry it its a good way to get your a$$ shot off. Another piece of advice if for some reason you do smoke someone. Put the gun down and dont be holding it when some rookie officer gets on the scene.
