OT anyone using microsoft vista???

I've got a sneaking suspision my computer may be getting ready to take a dump. I've been looking at Laptops and unless I shell out $1500-2000 on a Macbook, the only other choice is laptops with Windows Vista. I've heard it's crap. Locking up. Jumping programs etc. Looks like it's the only alternative with desktop or laptop computers these days.

Remember......I'm barely computer literate...so go easy with the tech-talk :confused:
 
why not buy a laptop without vista pre-installed? get a laptop and put windows xp on it.

or get a mac... which also have their flaws
 
You already lost me. How would I go about doing that? I have the XP disc that came with the current Hooptie HP Desktop I'm using. Guys like me go to Best Buy, refuse the warranty and want to punch the know it all salesman in the face for talking down to me.
 
You can get XP still if you contact HP/Dell/etc. You actually have to buy Vista, and downgrade to XP. It is what a lot of companies are doing to avoid Vista. Do you have any old computer hardware (scanners, printers, cameras, etc) that you would hook up to the new computer? Some older hardware doesn't have drivers for Vista.

What do you do with your computer? Any super intensive programs like photoshop, or anything? The only person that I have seen have a problem with Vista (out of 20+ people) was my cousin. He works with Photoshop and has files that are like 50 gigs). It very well may be his computer and not vista though.

My fiancee uses Vista on her laptop and likes it. I've used it in a production environment (at work) and never had a problem with it.

Or buy from a local store with a local warranty

That is more the norm most people unless connecting to a network domain have no problems at all

Windows XP is supposed to go totally away the end of January unless they extend it

I do pictures, I pod, CD's, Dvds, and surf the web. My wife does word processing. That's about it for us. Nothing fancy. I paid a boatload for this computer 6 years ago with big dreams, but the 1st sentence is the reality.
 
We use Vista on our home computer w/ no issues. Some drivers weren't compatible but I'm not sure if that's gotten any better yet as we mainly had that problem when we were using the test version prior to release.
 
I doubt you'll have a problem with Vista. Things may look a little different, but you should be fine. I think people (including Mac fanboys) blew the Vista problems way out of proportion. I think for most people Vista works well.

Dell/HP/etc or PC Innovations ;) can help you out I'm sure.
 
I finally made my peace with Vista after a year of daily use. The trick is to turn off the UAC (Google it) and set it up to look like XP in most regards. Yeah I know, sounds stupid. I've been using computers for 20 years (professionally as a tech and sysadmin,) and I have never been scared of new operating systems, in fact I've looked forward to each one which was a big improvement over the last. Microsoft simply screwed the pooch with this one, but it is getting better.

Make sure they sell you a machine with AT LEAST 2 GB of memory, good video, and Vista Home PREMIUM, and you should be allright. There are a couple of things they did right, and the graphics subsystem is probably the best example of that.

I bought my Toshiba laptop Jan of 07 at Best Buy with Windows Vista pre installed. A bonus Lexmark scanner/printer came with the laptop as a combo "kit" purchase. Wouldn't you know it the scanner/printer WAS NOT Vista compatible!!! Why the hell would they sell them together I asked numerous Lexmark/Toshiba people. Sorry sir...blah blah blah. So now I'm using Windows Mojave. It's Ok. The only thing really different is a few icons are in different spots on the browser, etc. I'd try to use XP.
 
I thought Mojave was the "experiment" of getting feedback on Vista under a different name...

My suggestion if you go the Vista route... buy Vista Certified vs. Vista compatible. Compatible only guarantees that some functions will work. Certified means it passed Vista's actual requirements per Microsoft.

It's just been acting funny. The screen sleep mode goes into some lockdown phase where the only thing I can do is to turn the computer off and then on. Probably not the best solution. Also, it changes the way things look on a daily basis. Home screen. Dropdowns. Fonts change independently.

Maybe it's just gunked up and I should get an external hard drive and put all of my music and pics on it. Then just dump everything and re install the software???
 
If your machine is six years old and you have the cash on hand, spring for a new one.

Dude-If you can change your RC avatar, you can figure out Vista.

Oh, and don't go to Best Buy. That place is only good for brushing up on your Guitar Hero skills in front of a bunch of zitty teenagers. :D
