OT: Beef Recall, what are your thoughts?

It was due to inhumane treatment, but ultimately not following the regulations they're supposed to, which could open the door for health threats if other regulations were not followed as well. The USDA said there is a very remote risk for health threat Keep in mind a lot of this meat has already been eaten! If they really want it back I might be able to accomdate them... :hmm5:

IMO the fewer hands that touch my food the better, shop local.........back to Buffalo, whre are you finding it, I know of whole foods having some, and I think Ive seen a buffalo ranch out by el darado hills?? GREAT MEAT

Funny, most vegans I know tend to get sick quite often and are the frailest of people I know.

I don't know the folks you do obviously, but I would ask how many of them eat enough calories and get enough exercise? Eating right is only one part of the equation. Eating enough and getting the system moving are wholly seperate issues.

Just how does the fat required for brain function come to be on a vegan diet? Just where does the natural fatty acids come from? Some suppliment? Funny how in order to be a vegan you need to use suppliments to even be healthy ;)
Nuts and legumes. The only suppliment a vegan needs is B12. Everything else should come from a 'balanced' diet. Eating lettuce and a carrot everyday isn't going to cut it. Personally, I just think that meat should be a topping more than a meal. Like a chicken ceasar or shrimp alfredo.

Vegan rings too much of someone who likes to debate for the sake of debate. They want to be diferent than everyone else and use this as a means of showing their seperation.
Completely agree. These folks generally do things for their own percieved morality, than any science behind it. Personal opinion...they lack self confidence. That is why I put in the medical journal studies. Morality discussion about anything is useless as everyone has different views. I just started this to get some friendly discussion going. :)

Man i just had a beautiful ribeye at Ruth Chris saturday, yummy!
Also my favorite cut! :D

Hey kdblove_99,
I have to say that that is my favorite Steak there!!! I will be dining at Mortons this Saturday and guess what I'll be ordering?!

Sorry to be OT from the OT thread, but have you tried cooking them at home? Its super easy and tastes ALMOST just as good! Ive never been to Mortons which is why Im going, but I have heard good things. I LOVE RUTH CHRIS!!!

I love Mortons. When I was single, I used to go there quite often on dates. Now that I am married with children, I can't afford that place anymore. However, for those of you looking for a "bargain" at Morton's, they have "Steak and Seafood for 2" for $99.

(PS - I am partial towards filet mignon, but now I buy th large Costco package and BBQ it myself.)

You could have bought a couple nice frags for what dinner at Ruth Chris costs. Gotta set those priorities man :D

So nuts and legumes with provide one enough essiantial fatties acids, aminos and such?

http://www.vegetarian-nutrition.info/vn/essential_fatty_acids.htm

Answerred my own question and that article raises some points I was trying to make indirectly.

Okay Gresh, I know you are much better at nutrition than I am. Help me out here. I read that as alpha-linolenic can be converted to EPH and DHA. It isn't efficient and can be inhibited by saturated fats, alcohol, etc. Omega 6 isn't the issue, omega-3 is. It is recommend to consume flax and soy to get your dose.

Thanks for the info either way. I wan't aware that it was an issue. I'll have to look more into it and ask some more questions.

Here is another for you that is still nagging me...

A current anthropological theory suggests that when we started to consume animals is when the brain started to grow and eventually seperated us from chimps.

Like I said...I want my kids to be vegetarians, but I still think that organic real meat is essential in the diet. It should just be a topping for other dishes.

I grew up near ElDorado Hill's... and although I'm a little embarresed to say, I actually accompanied some drunken buddie's and went "Bison Tipping" back in highschool!... (lol)
A little scarry, MAN those thing's are huge!!! And parking off the sholder of Hwy50 as we jumped the fence was a bust!!! : O
The stupid thing's children do...

On topic- I think the recall is pointless. There isnt nothing to recall, unless they are recalling the current beef out there. But all that other meat is long gone.

Now a lil OT---
My wife and I watched Fast food nation and we were both shocked on the actual footage. My wife to this day does not want a hamburger and gets sick thinking about it.

Luckily enough, we have stopped eating fast food. We have had no fast food in 6 weeks and you would be surprised how good it is for you. I've lost 15 pounds just by not eating Fastfood and a little bit of exercise.

I loved my Dbl western bacon cheeseburgers, but I love my kids and life more. No more 970 cal burgers.

Okay, here's my stone to throw in: the evil E word.... evolution baby!

If most of us were originally hunter/gatherers, then we got meat sporadically... but were primarily vegetarians..... now I've read that certain cultures (more linked to DNA, to establish origins than culture) are more accustomed, or their bodies are more atuned to a vegetable-based diet, or a meat-based diet. If this is true, then we really can't "sell" our opinions about what is the best diet to have, without first accepting that we're not all built for the same types of foods. Some cultures can eat all sorts of carbs (rice for example) and be super skinny, where another culture may try living the same way and not have the metabolism to process it properly, gaining weight/becoming fat.

I know I'm rambling, but there's truth up there somewhere, eh?

My personal conclusion is: find out where your heritage originated (sometimes a bit difficult!), and build your diet on that. AND DON'T EAT FAST FOOD!! duh....
