OT: Brighthouse Networks Digi Nav...

I just got switched over to the new Digital Navigator yesterday when I came home from work. All I can say is wow, it's a really stinkin' pile of crap now. The format is horrible and looks like it was designed by a couple 6th graders, for the first DVR format back in the 90's. The menu is so pixelated, it's hard to read the text, and searching for shows, is now a needle-in-the-haystack mission. But to top everything off, the real kicker is how long it takes to change channels. It's doesn't matter how you do it, (hitting the 'Last' button, or CH+/-, or typing the numbers in), it takes at least a solid 3-5 seconds.

Has anyone else been 'blessed' with this new format yet? Apparently now the cable is 100% digital, so I'm guessing that the Pioneer Passport software, wasn't compatible, or for some god awful reason, BNH decided to try software themselves?

It doesnt work well on my tv either. I wish they would go back to what they had before. At first I thought I just had to learn something new and then it would be easy again. But no its still a pain in the butt. What makes me mad is they raised my service 6 bucks. I know its only 6 bucks but dang I dont want to be paying more for the same service. lol

Wow I'm sorry to hear you guys are having troubles :( Where I am we have comcast and while I love Tivo, we also rent an HD DVR from them to record our shows. Its not quite as good as the brand name but it definitely doesn't sound as bad as what you guys are talking about.

Maybe if it becomes insufferable it'll be time to look into a different company? We ended up getting a package that made our internet/tv stuff together cheaper than what we were paying separately.

Best of luck with all that.

Yes, that upgrade was a PITA, and I'm not the only one with the same feeling. The worst thing is you cannot go back to the previous version.

yeah same here. Horrible. Horrible. horrible. Funny as soon as your get real comfortable with things they change them!

Ours had problems from the start as well. I had to call their tech support twice to get it working.
The DVR functions are not as good as the previous version. If you hit the delete button there is no confirmation request..........

Never have been a fan of Bright House, but don't have a choice. They're the only game in our neighborhood. And I don't want to mess with a dish.....

wow, I gotta question. can you cancel your dvr and just get a tivo? I been wanting to do that. i have comcast and they make me have the top of the line channels to have the dvr. paying $100 a month for a dvr with a bunch of channels I dont use. hmm.

I have been with Dish Network for a few years and have to say I am 98% satisfied. The weather has to be realllly bad before it goes out. But I have hd dvrs and reg dvr in bedroom and my bill is not too bad.

Is there a way to search by keyword? So far it hasn't worked for me.

Is there a way to make a "manual" recording, such as every Friday 8-9pm regardless of what the show is? Not as far as I can tell.

Does it still tell you approximately how much time is left before a recorded show is deleted? I don't think so.

Seems like a step backwards to me. But I bet they are saving a bunch of money. Maybe they switched from some leased third party software "passport"? to something that they are developing in house...

Yeah you can buy a Tivo and use it and its service instead (I think its only $5 or $10 a month) and its AWESOME. While its cheaper for high def channels to rent our cable's box downstairs, I keep my tivo running upstairs for my night owl tv prowess.

The only downside is to have a tivo that will actually record in high def, it costs more but regular tivos are pretty sweet. Just make sure you get one for cable if you use cable, or Directivo for satellite/directv.

Tivo also has great forums for support and questions regarding their services and products.

I have neighbors who are complaining of the same problems. I wonder if this is local to Orlando or more widespread?

To search by keyword, in the Menu, hit 'B', then 'B' again. While using the keyboard, you'll notice it's just the 'little things' that make this so frustrating. Like, normally, how you can 'cheat' a keyboard by going up on the top line, and have it go to the bottom line, automatically? It doesn't do it on this new POS. Also you only get to use ONE word, sure there's a space in there to add another, but it does nothing. (straight from Brighthouse's website)

No, there no way to set a manual time recording. Period (that is literally straight from Brighthouse online).

All there is to tell you that a show is up for deletion is a little triangle with !, to tell you it's at risk. Then for options on keeping the show, all you can do permanently keep it, or to choose to delete it. Gone is the priority 'Keeper Longer' where you could set over shows to delete first.

Sadly, it's just not one step back, it's like they jogged in reverse. I will have to see if the cable is tied to into the HOA fees, otherwise I'm strongly considering Satellite.

This actually happened before with Bright House (sort of). Back in February or so. Bright House dropped all their HD channels for their cableCARD customers (what it takes to run TiVo). There was such a backlash, that Brighthouse added the channels back, and even some new ones.

I wonder if there is any we can do too for the software.

I control everything with my TiVo (not generic DVR... literally a TiVo brand) and nothing has really changed for me other than the fact that the cable box time is ~40 mins behind the real time... so I am actually very luck that I have my TiVo because if I was relying on a Brighthouse DVR I would miss ~40 mins of every show...

I HATE the keyword search thing. It was so easy before. I HATE CHANGE. lol lol The only thing I like about it, is it tells you how much space you have used on your memory. So if it gets up in the 80s you better start watching shows or deleteing them. lol

Lastnight I was watching happily unmarried and noticed it didnt tape the new adventures of christine. I couldnt find it in the search keyword part, it wouldnt let me go a week in advance to tape it next week. So im pretty much screwed now, I have to remember to tape set it to tape it next week now. lol CHANGE SUCKS. lol

Unfortunately the triangle only shows up if you are in the saved recording section.
If you are watching something it doesn't give you the confirm request.

I totally agree - I wish there were options other than satellite - but unfortunately there aren't

Another thing that bugs me about the digital box - it has USB and Firewire ports on it - but you can't access them to download anything you recorded.

wow didn't know there was so much problems over there. over here in t'ville or at least my place it's perfect. the upgrade too alittle getting used to but other than that have not been without service for years now. i've had the hd dvr for almost 2 years and the reception is perfect. we have 3 boxes and all have work with no flaws, and the cable is very fast in this area too. sorry to here there are so moany problems. i do know that david k (davy182) works for either brighthouse or jaguar and he maybe able to help.

Joe, there's really nothing wrong with the actual Brighthouse service, and I've had little problems with BHN over the years (just had to exchange 2 modems in a row to get the internet to work, after moving into the new house 2 years ago). And behind UCF, we're right next to one of the main spines, so internet is always blazing 500kps+.

It's just like coming home to find someone installed Windows 95, on your computer, when you're so used to XP Pro/Media Center. Remembering back now, BHN had commericals running for a while now, and in good frequency, about this upcoming 'Digital Navigator' and even had a channel devoted to it (50, IIRC?). I think thay may be part of the frustation, after being told how much of an upgrade this was going to be, then the disappointment.

good thing AT&T is going to start offering TV service, (IPTV) in December!!! as i hate the new DVR software also. my biggest complaint, is that now you can't use the fav button while in the menu. it used to go to the next fav channel in the menu, now it just changes the channel.....LAME

Yes, there's nothing wrong with the cable itself, it is the new upgrade they did to the boxes, the new interface and the software itself is not really good compared to what we had before.
And yes, I missed that FAV button while you're in the tv guide.
