OT: Broken Chest Freezer

My 7 cubic foot chest freezer gets cold, but not cold enough to freeze. Is it repairable, or would it cost too much to repair? I'm guessing it needs coolant or a new compressor. The compressor runs and gets hot to the touch, but just isn't freezing any longer. How much would it be worth? I think we paid around $200 for it 4 years ago. Would anyone be interested in it?

Probably worth a trip to the curb for what it would cost to fix. You've cleaned all your coils I assume...?

Depending on the size maybe yes to keep my beers cold. Make & Model? Being newer it probably isn't the easiest to recharge, but you may be able to find a refrigeration tech who can leak check it and fix the leak for less than a new one would cost you if you want to keep it. I hate the disposable crap that is made nowadays, but society has bred convenience into us and we pay for that. If you have the connections to get it fixed it should be a cheap fix. The only guy I know out your way does HVAC sheetmetal and wouldn't be much help, but check into a mom & pop shop if you've got one for appliances for your best chance of a reasonable fix.

There aren't any valves on it to just put refrigerant in it so you would need to install piercing valves in it. These are known to leak over time so plan on having it serviced every few years, or longer if you are lucky. It does sound like it may be low however it could be as simple as a bad thermostat. Usually if it is low on freon you would see a pipe all iced up under the fridge. A extremely hot compressor is also a sign of low freon.
