OT: Camping....

I've already booked 4 different camping trips between May and August for my wife and I. 2 of those trips will be in the family camper, the other 2 we'll be tenting it but the camper will be in the same park with another family member. So far we're looking at Wildwood to end May/begin June, Smith Point to celebrate July 4, Smith Point a week later and then Hither Hills to celebrate our birthdays in late July into August.

I haven't tented it in about 20 years and we just bought the camper last September. Can't wait!

I'm familiar with Smith Point and Hither Hills but have never been to Wildwood, at least that I remember. Anyone have any camping related tips or suggestions? I'm also open to ideas on what to see and do.

I like wildwood. I don't think there is anything unusual that you need to prepare for. I don't think they let me bring my dog.

If you're brining the camper to Wildwood, be prepared with a whole bunch of levelling blocks. Some parts of the campground are extremely hilly. So, unless you like to sleep at an angle, bring extra blocks. I don't believe dogs are allowed at Wildwood, though I'm not sure about that. I've gone camping at a bunch of different LI camprgrounds and the experiences have kind of merged into one big camping trip. I have seen dogs at one of the grounds I went to, just not sure which one it was.

Wildwood is overrun with ticks, take every precaution to protect yourself.
No pets allowed there either.

Yeah, no dogs at the state parks like wildwood and hither hills. Dogs are ok in county parks like smith point.

No. Camper at wildwood. Then tent in smith point. Then again at smith point with camper and finally hither hills with tent.

Everytime we are tenting it the camper is only a few sites over being used by another family member.

Spray your tent with water repellent the day before your trip.
Bug repellent
Fly swatter
Beach Chairs
Beach Towels
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Fishing rod
Cooler
Six pack
Do you know if the tent area will be on the sand or pavement at SP or HH?

I'm assuming packed dirt at both places. I already purchased a heavy duty tarp to go under the tent.

This is a brand new tent and I havne't even taken it out of the box. Once my landscape guys come and it gets nicer I plan to set the tent up and see how it fares. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well.

Does anyone know the water situation at Hither Hills? Last time I was there was about 20 years ago and I remember water spigots every few sites. When we bring the camper will they allow us to attach a hose to the spigot to fill the camper and then disconnect the hose once it's full?

We took our camper out of storage this week and I just packed the fridge. My brother, our dad and I are heading out to Wildwood tomorrow to kick off the camping season with a guys weekend. Wouldn't you know it, the only time it's rained in months is the weekend we're camping. lol Wish us luck!

Hey guys. This is an older thread but I might as well bring it back to life.

My parents got a smaller camper in September of 2011 and this past summer was the first camping season for us. Everyone loved it so much that my brother bought a much larger camper a few months ago and my parents just sold their little camper today to get a larger one.

Between the two campers I think we already have 15 trips planned between April and Labor Day. Less then 3 months to go before the first trip of 2013! Can't wait!

Are there any other campers here?
