OT: Camping

There might be rain this weekend which would be nice, just hoping it is not a downpour as I am planning on going doorless and topless. What's a little water, right?! :)

Kristina has been wanting to go here for a long time. Was it pretty busy there?

You have to call them and make reservations. We took up the final two spots for that day, so it was full, but you wouldn't know it if you pick a good campsite.

At work and only have a couple pictures on my phone, but here are the falls on the ground level. If you're curious on the campsite area, I'm sure I can dig some pictures up. I would really recommend the trip sometime.

Looking at the quality of that picture compared to Bob's is funny to say the least.

Cyzax, that's absolutely incredible. Great shot! OK, I'm definitely sold on that spot. Than you very much for sharing.

Anyone know of a campground on the rim that has lake access and restrooms? Don't need hookups, would be for tent camping. Oh yeah, showers would be good too.......for the wife...yeah.....

Wife and I just hiked down and camped at Havasu Falls. It was a 12 mile hike down through the Canyon, but it was beautiful and has campgrounds with drinking water/bathrooms right near the falls.

Was this before or after the flooding this summer? If it was before the flooding I'd check to see what shape the campground is in so you know what to expect.

The village of Supai recently experienced a major flash flood which stranded inhabitants who needed to be rescued by helicopter. Supai is right above the falls and campground so I would expect the flash floods went through the campground.

I recently stayed in the Rolfe C Hoyer campground near Greer. It's actually not near the rim but it's at the same elevation. It's about the same drive time. I don't know of any lakes on the Grand Canyon park's south rim. There is Jacob Lake on the north rim where there are campgrounds.

The RC Hoyer campground has a bunch of nearly new showers and nice campsites. There are some reservoirs nearby where you can fish. There's a grocery store about a mile outside of the campground.

This lure was catching fish. Sorry about the low quality phone picture but you get the idea. It's about 1&1/2 inches long:

Woods Canyon Lake would be your best bet. I don't think there are showers but there is everything else you mentioned including a small general store.

We were up there afterwards. Still looks to be in pretty good shape.

I regret to inform the reefing community that zibba (Eric) has found a new hobby to spend his money and time on - 4x4 Jeeping!! Even though he did it in a 2 wheel Jeep Commander, I suspect that wont last long! :)

Eric & Kristina and dog in their Commanger, myself and 3 passengers in my Wrangler Jeep and at least 140 other Jeepers from Arizona Virtual Jeep Club did the back roar to Crown King 15th Annual Run today. This was also my first time off road in a Jeep and we totally had a blast!!!

We met up and left at 3am this morning, I got home at 5:30pm, they are camping at Crown King tonight with other Jeepers. I didn't have my camera, used my phone, but he had his good one and you know how good his pics are, so stayed tuned!

Both of us found a lot of guts and nerve we never knew we had today on this awesome, crazy and very wet trail!
What a day Eric!

Definitely had a blast out there even though we were way out of our element! Thanks for the invite, Phil!

We also got in some camping at Horsethief Lake on Saturday. Great time and looking forward to getting back out to try some of the other recommendations for camping spots.

Here are a few pictures:

Phil, ripping it up!

Kristina being artsy:

Our dog came along for the ride:

Awesome thread and some great photos.

Could anyone recommend somewhere to camp and ride ATV's? I am planning a guys wkend to take some 4 wheelers out and was thinking possibly the dunes, but not everyone has paddle tires or even sport quads for that matter- and some guys that are interested in just campaing and the dunes arent a fun place to simply go to camp.
Probably planning to go in Oct, but I dont know of a place that would be fun to camp (no sites needed, would rather be out and alone) but has some fun riding to do. I would rather some cooler weather, but that also means elevation, but Im not sure I want to rejet my quad for a big elevation.
Any thoughts or recommendations?

Oct will be cooling down. You might try Constellation Rd out of Wickenburg. The road is behind the McDonalds. Go in a few miles and you see people camping most anywhere. Not forest but tons of trails for quadding. Tons of old mining claims and such. If you go way in (10 miles?) you come to the Constellation mine. Still has buildings and such.

We tried to make our way up to Bull Pen Ranch campground on Saturday but they closed it down for overnight camping due to people trashing it and they wanted to let things settle a bit. The park ranger that explained that to us was super helpful and gave us a fireroad map of the national forest and we made our way up to Beaver Creek Campground. Beaver Creek was packed an not very nice, in my opinion, so we continued on to Lawrence Crossing. Lawrence Crossing is beautiful and much more secluded. Running water, nice campsites and plenty of hiking in the area to keep you busy during the day. I'd highly recommend it.

We'll be continuing to try out most of the places recommended but wanted to keep this thread going with our experiences so far.
