OT... Can anyone tell me about the Poinciana area??

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

LET ME CATCH MY BREATH!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I would never move down there. Most of the schools are D and F rated. Family members who live down there say it is getting worse and worse. I stayed over my cousins house 1 night deep in Poncianna in a part where every street is named after a animal and no lie spending 1 nigt there and next morning someone stole all the emblems off my honda.

There are some parts that are nice like the Oak Commons area. But if you find a gorgeous house for a price too good to be true you know it is in a bad area.

If you really want a nice area to move to look for houses in the 34744 zip code. We have the best schools 2 A and 1 B school in area plus numerous well maintained parks. 1 college, close to a bunch of malls shopping centers and we have 2 reef stores in the area.

I live in poinciana. Not the greatest place and its far from everything. The police chopper seems to fly over a couple days a week doing drug busts and what not. I live pretty deep in poinciana so my area is fairly quiet and not much crime.

Id say outta the kissimmee area altogether. conway, windemere, waterford lakes, belle isle, downtown orlando, winter park, college park, winter garden(not near the just busted hot dog shop!)lol. dont mean to offend anyone not living in these places or kiss.

I could tell you a little about the area but I'm curious if you're moving for work? Expecting a certain kind of commute? Looking just for family, anything else in particular, etc?

Orlando in general is relatively safe, but there are certain areas I feel have more violent crimes than others whereas most of the other crimes are theft, burglary etc.

The Kissimmee area used to be a very popular place for retirees and tourists but now there are more devisive factors in that area. Nice communities meeting with apartment and lower income areas. It doesn't necessarily make it a bad place, but if you're looking for something specific the Central Florida area is very sprawley so hopefully we can help.

Was thinking about a job in the Orlando area (DoD)...but the taxes/prices/heat/hurricanes+insurance is just too overwhelming.

Taxes arnt too bad here....heat, it gets hot....prices are comparable to other states and cities, you just have to shop around wether its a house or a new car. Yes there are huricanes...but, Ive lived here for 20 plus years and only delt with the 4 that came through in 2004. most of the damage in my area was falling trees, roof shingles, and loss of power.

One of the issues with jobs in the Orlando area is that usually you're going to have a pretty big commute. My husband and I are actually moving to Seattle in a few months and while its more expensive there we wont have to deal with the heat, hurricanes, bugs.. and while the traffic is supposed to be awful there we're going to rent before we buy so hopefully there wont be the very long commute ;p

I dont really care for Poinciana that much. Its far away from everything. The places I have been dont seem like good neighborhoods either, but thats just me looking as I drove by. Im sure its like everywhere else though. You could live in a million dollar house and a mile away be the hood. I will say I went to a Super Bowl party this year and it was AMAZING...... Great party. lol

I'm a cop in Kissimmee and wouldn't live in this crap box if you gave me a house. The aparments and the people/wanna be gang bangers have taken over the area. But hey it's job security for me. Your'e asking about Poinciana though and I wouldn't live there if it was the last habitable place on earth.

You made my wife and I chuckle!! Yeah, the house prices are very low and very tempting. I am still debating what we are going to do and where it will be. Have another offer and need to look into both.

Thanks all for the information. It's funny. I come here to RC FIRST, before I check any other sites on the internet. Thanks!!

You really need to make a trip down and check out the area first anyway. Some areas here you would think are nice and quiet are crap holes, and some you would think would be crap holes are nice. I personally am with saltyj, i wouldn't live down in that area if you gave me the house. It's too far to drive to Orlando to work from here, but it's very nice and quiet. It's only 25 miles or so, but it's the longest 25 miles on earth lol. The whole Orlando area is just a congested toll booth infested crap hole IMO. Try looking at the Clermont area if you need to be down that way. Whatever you do, don't drive through the Mount Dora area or you will be wanting to move here. I drove through town one time and quit looking anywhere else in the state right then and there.

Speaking from the experience of someone who had lived in Michigan for 38 years prior to moving to Orlando, I can say that there are a lot of pros and cons to the area. In general, I really enjoy not having to deal with 6 months of winter or shoveling 4" worth of "partly cloudy." I will say, however, that I miss having four distinct seasons and especially miss fall. The cider mills (no apple trees down here south of the 30th parallel), cool & frosty mornings, football season and Christmas are simply not the same down here.

As for housing, I had a bit of sticker shock when we came down . Despite the very rapid decline in home values over the past couple of years, the housing here in Central Florida is still ridiculously priced compared to up north. A $200K house down here is about on par with a $120K house in the upper Midwest.

The fact that there is no state income tax is deceivingly attractive. The higher utility prices, homeowner's insurance prices, property taxes and crazy high grocery costs make up for the lack of state income tax and then some.

We've been here for about two years now. I left the automotive industry to take a position with a DoD contractor. We've found an area that we like a lot (we're in Clermont... the hills here reminded us of home). We like the schools pretty well in our immediate little pocket, but the neighboring/surrounding schools aren't the best... in general, the quality of education down here is not as good as what my children received in Michigan BUT, due to the size of the schools (they're all HUGE), the schools do offer a lot of programs and activities my kids did not have up there.

So in general, I am beginning to get adjusted and we like it. My wife loves it here and although there are a lot of things I like (such as year-round golf, going to the beach, etc.) I would go back to Michigan in a heartbeat. I'd be happy to share my insights with you from the perspective of a previous upper Midwester myself if you're interested... just shoot me a PM. btw... homebrew rocks!!
