OT - Discus starter group giveaway?

You know, I posted this thread over on Scape (another local forum group but deals with planted tanks) and thought it would be fun to see if there is any interest here since a lot of you are locals.

Here's the deal copy/pasted from my other thread:

As a few of you may know, I am currently growing out a group of discus. 24 discus to be exact. In any group of discus, there will always be culls, it is unavoidable. I was given this group by a dear friend to grow and to sell off any of the group to give money back to him. He couldn't hold on to the large group because he was selling a lot of his fish room. Anyways, my point is this, he doesn't want me to cull the discus that I deem not "sellable". This doesn't mean they aren't healthy, on the contrary, this group is very healthy and all eat like pigs. However, there are those few that are runts and I can already tell which I want to go on to the next stage of my growth project and which I do not. These are the ones I 'do not' want to move forward with. After this first wave of "culls" I will actually have a sale of the next group of discus that I no longer want to keep, but will not be culls. This first wave is to eliminate the runts/culls. Second wave will be great grade discus, but I simply can't keep a group larger than 10 or so. I have to keep cutting back as they grow.

So, that brings me to this thread. I will have roughly, 5-6 discus "culls" that need a new home. I am only doing this so that someone can get a feel for raising discus. This is only for that member that has been on the fence about owning discus, but not wanting to take the plunge. Again, if you have never had an interest in raising discus, please let others that have take first dibs on this offer.

Now, what do culls mean? Simply put, these discus will not grow to the size that I am looking for out of my main group, which is roughly a 7" discus. Typically, you will find 3" discus in an LFS. These will surpass that quickly if you raise them right and will more than likely end up growing to a decent 5" or so. Not bad considering they would be an entry discus at no cost.

What are the requirements? If you want the group, they need to be kept in a 55g or larger, no execeptions. I will not give these out to someone with a 29g or 40g breeder, etc. 55g minimum.

I can tell you how to care for discus and where to buy foods and such to keep your discus healthy. Again, keep in mind that these are what I consider "culls" and I feel it wouldn't be ethical to sell them, but my friend doesn't want me culling them.

To give you an idea of the water changes that go in to this group, I do daily 60% Water changes and feed anywhere from 3-6x's a day depending on my work schedule. If you were to pick up this group, I would expect a decent amount of water changes to be done if you want them to achieve that 5" mark I spoke about earlier. Anything short of that and your culls will quickly become stunted.

So, keep that in mind if you want the group. In the end, I can only tell you what I would like for these discus, but once you have them in your possession, they will be yours to keep and do with them as you will. Just remember that these were given as culls and not as regular grade discus. The point of this whole thing is to get a feel for a caring for a group of discus to hopefully get you to the next level of keeping much more expensive discus, which I can help you acquire down the line.

For those that do not know, I am a moderator over at SimplyDiscus and have been raising discus for quite a while now. I can give you all the info you need, but you must be willing to accept the responsibility of this group, even if they are culls.

If interested, post here with what you have (equipment), when you can be ready for them, and what interest you have had in discus. Not taking pm's quite yet on the matter, I'd like to publicly see who is interested in the group.

These will be ready within the next few weeks, so that is the timeline I am working with here. I will not "hold" the group for anyone if they aren't ready when I am ready to pass up the group

Oh, I forgot to add the growout thread I have going over on SimplyDiscus. I hope it is ok to post here. If it isn't, I can delete. LMK

If I had my aquarium set up, I would jump all over this.
Very nice of you to do this. Just bad timing for me.

Rick this is pretty cool what you doing man. I'm not ready for them either. When I start I will hit you up with a lot of questions.

This is awesome! I actually was debating about going into discus or saltwater after keeping flowerhorns for a long time. But in the end I chose saltwater to see how it is. Will definitely try discus soon though. I'm also a member on simplydiscus :)

To those interested, I think it would be awesome coming from a reefing experience to a freshwater discus experience. I'd actually like for these to go to someone in this forum the more I think on it. If any one of you can get a 55g up and running, I'd like to give you this group. You can literally have the 55g tank, a heater and a sponge filter with an air pump and they'd do fine. In that type of setup they'd need regular water changes but it is a very bare bones approach.

Tell me what you got, your approximate time line and we can possibly work something out. Lmk :)

actually just set my office tank up... It is a 60 gallon 36x18x22 tank. It is planted. It has driftwood and I am currently fighting the tannin war.... I have (2) halo lights on it Master and Slave. I have a Hydor 600 canister filter with via aqua 300 Watt heater on it. I have an up aqua CO2 regulator with a 10 lb cylinder.
I have had freshwater fish for over 40 years and until I got saltwater fish, corals, and all of the equipment that goes with that, I always thought discuss were so beautiful and so expensive.....

I remember the days when I thought 100 for a fish was ridiculous.... Boy, I miss those days....

Well, now, I have a 180 reef at home which I absolutely enjoy. I have a nice build thread on here so if you would like to see the quality that I like and want in my tanks, please look at it.

I also have a 3000 gallon Koi pond in my backyard.... over 40 Fish in there and a ton of fun to have.... My largest is just a shade under 24".

I have put the same kind of thought and quality in my tank at the office. I work long hours and it is nice to have the tank in there....

I am going to get discus, but, I was thinking about 4 to 5 of different colors. I will be asking your opinions and I have already been over to the simply discus site.

I would be real interested in this offer, but, I think my tank maybe too small and I am leaving to Italy on October 30th returning on the 14th of November, so, this offer wont work, but, I will be able to ask you questions and learn from you.

I think it is a real cool thing that you are doing and I will follow this thread to see who gets them and hopefully keeps everybody updated to their progress.

Rick, you should consider Randy. He will do it right.

I really like what you are saying. Here's the thing, and if you don't agree with me, I'd be more than happy to offer you the group.

Your setup sounds really nice, I mean, really nice, display tank even. These discus are a starter type of discus to see if you can maintain them. They will not be show quality discus, and if the proper care isn't given, they can easily become stunted and remain small. They will be smaller than their siblings for sure, I can already tell that, but again, they will not be show quality. If you can live with this fact, and not expect show quality discus in a setup that sounds a lot like a tank I'd put grade A discus in, then we have a deal. I can wait till you get back mid month next month, by then, they would have added some size as well. Just know this, I really do need them gone by that point because I am already somewhat pushing the boundaries of overcrowding in this tank the way I am feeding.

Let me know how this sounds, and if you'd like to pass on the offer, please let us know here so that everyone knows the group is still available.

One last thing, if you head over to simplydiscus, they will tell you that a planted tank is one of the hardest ways to raise discus, me included, so just know, chances of them reaching that 5" mark in a fully planted tank, with co2 (discus don't generally like co2) is going to be tough.

You have steered me away from Discus and I thank you for being totally honest.

what is the maintenance like for a properly set up tank that's been cycled? (with sump). How often do you need to do water change? RODI water?

I'm sorry, that surely wasn't my intent :(.

The thing about discus is that they require a lot of care to grow out properly. However, if you want to bypass that stage, which is the most time consuming and expensive part, you can jump right to adults and get a nice group and the maintenance and water changes goes down dramatically!

Don't give up on them, they are a beautiful fish that just need some catering to, but they have crazy character.

I open this invitation to you and everyone else, if you want to swing by my house any time to check out discus, please do so. We can grab a few beers and we can go over what it actually takes to keep these beautiful fish :)

So, a tank that is fully cycled, preferrably with ammonia and not by other fish, you simply add the discus, do heavy water changes the first 2 weeks to let the bacteria colony keep up with the new introduced bio load and you are good to go.

Regular maintenance requires a good amount of feedings, I would recommend at least 3 feedings a day if you can wing it. The water changes really depend on how much you are feeding and WHAT you are feeding. If I were to completely cut beefheart out of their diet, my water changes would be a lot less frequent, but BH is so messy that it requires daily water changes for me because I feed it twice a day.

Other than that, you do NOT need RO/DI water, in fact, young discus benefit from tap water. However, you must make sure your tap water doesn't have a high pH swing for direct tap water changes. I use an aging barrel for water changes because my water is heavily oxygenated which in turn results in a whole lot of micro bubbles all over the tank. This gets in to the discus gills and makes them very uncomfortable and stresses them out.

I know I am being very detailed here, but we can go over all this with whomever is interested in the group. I will repeat, since these are culls, I don't expect the same level of attentiveness that I would give to my group that I will keep. I want them as large as possible and that requires a whole lot of work which I have been doing so far for the whole group.

No need to be sorry! I meant it as a complement. Your information made me realize that I'm not prepared to handle Discus.

I haven't heard back from Randy, but I just wanted to let everyone know that currently I have 2 candidates at the top of my list to get them. Randy and another fellow on another forum that has a nice sized tank that is willing to go BB. At the end of the day, I will give them to the caring hands that will offer them the best chance of a good long life :)

Ok folks, I have someone preparing a tank as we speak and they say they can grab the group next week. If that falls through I will have the group up again to give away :)

This is a picture of the group:
