OT: Dog issue...

hey everyone,

So we have a 7-8 month old mutt, she's def. part german shepard, but not nearly the size and she's very petite. (medium sized, about 30 lbs)

Two things, sometimes she shakes her rapidly, its not violent or anything but its like a stutter...it's wierd....


Second thing is she pees the bed ALOT. When she sleeps she ****es her self, this happens like 1-3 times every couple of weeks. She just did it again, she was laying in my bed getting ready to sleep then she flipped out and jump up, then there was a big wet spot....

Is this normal? should i bring her to the vet or something?

Have her checked for a urinary tract infection. Has she always done it, or is it new? Is she spayed?

Also, you left out a word there...what is it that she's shaking?

no she's not spayed, we are spaying her soon

Her head - check her ears. Better yet, have the vet check her for UTI and look at her ears.

JMO, but I wouldn't let her sleep in the bed until she can hold her bladder. For one, it's gross. Two, if it's not medical and it's a housetraining issue, it's easier to correct it by having her sleep in a crate. Dogs are less likely to pee on a hard, nonabsorbant surface, especially if confined.

it's so hard to say no, she loves to snuggle

it's not a housetraining issue, cause she knows to bark/whine when she needs to go out. we're pretty good at training her

Tonight was the first time she did it when she was awake, normally she does it when she;s sleeping.

We've thought about crating the dogs, but i haven't really made my mind if i like that idea or not.

Peeing indoors is either a medical problem or housetraining issue.

My dogs are beyond housetrained, but the crates are still here. I can leave the door open, and they go in them on their own when they feel like it. Dogs like to have their own den.

BTW, you have her whole life to let her snuggle on the bed. What's a month or two going to hurt?

If it's a UTI, easy fix. If it's common incontinence, it's also easily treatable. To me, it sounds like she's not aware she's doing it, so I'm inclined to think it's medical and easily fixed. No worries -- just get her to the Vet asap. And don't forget to ask about the head shaking and have them look into her ears. Might as well ask them to do a flush since it's just a couple bucks and it generally cleans them out better than you can at home.

The shaking of the head is probably like Amanda said, ear infection or ear mites....sometimes it can be from flea or food alergy also. If she goes swimming a lot just get swim ear at local walmart and put in ear after swimming after the vet determines exactly what the prob is. If she has floppy ears and goes swimming they will get basically like a yeast infection in ears and it itches a bunch. The other problem of bed wetting....that sounds like Amanda is right on the button w/ that also. If it isn't a medical prob. then it is definitely because of age and not fully trained. It takes smaller dogs a very long time to be fully trained. My experience is about 9-12 months of consistency w/ smaller to med breed and about 6 months on larger breed. Crate training is by far the BEST way to potty train. I have been a breeder of Golden Retrievers-Lg breed and yorkshire terrier -sm breed for 8 1/2 yrs and experience with both breeds for 20 years. All of my dogs LOVE their crates. They have the option to come and go from their OWN crates at will. That is their security and their own little space they feel safe in. It doesn't mean that you can't have them in bed w/ you....just not all night. You can have them in bed for awhile to snuggle and such, but b4 you and her go to sleep she needs to go in a crate. Also, make sure you take her out to go potty right b4 you get in bed and then again b4 you put her in the crate for the rest of the evening. When you wake up that is the first thing is outside to go potty. After a routine of this for a couple weeks she will be trained and you can enjoy having her snuggle for the night from that point on. There is a vet between Fowler and Fletcher on 56 that I've heard good things about. Also (or the same place I can't remember) is the Temple Terrace Animal Clinic.

Stay away from a place called Buster Browns! The vet is rarely there and the staff is constantly screwing up!

Depending on the shaking, could be seizures. Fairly common in some breeds from everything I've read, some can be controlled with meds, some dogs grow out of it.

I have a pit/lab mix that will occasionally get very minor seizures. I've noticed it three times now, always at night. She'll have a minor, full body shake for 2-3 seconds and then nothing for a minute or so. This will go on for 10-30 minutes and then stop. I did a little research and spoke with my vet. Most likely, she will grow out of this type. However, if not, there are medications she can take. In my case, the seizures are so minor and so far apart (months), I'll probably do nothing.
