This is off topic, but has anyone rooted a Motorola Droid yet? I have debated rooting mine, but I do not know if it is worth it or not. If you have rooted it, did it bug out on you alot or does it run smooth. Just looking to see if anyone local has done it yet and their experience.

probably not a good idea, just download automatic task killer and task manager to kill unwanted tasks. it makes the phone runs more smooth, and also extends the battery life.

have you used the key chain app I just found it and like it you scan all your store cards with barcode and use your phone not the card anymore.

I was tempted to root my G1 but just decided to do what pelagic7 suggested and went with the task killer and have had no problems.. I guess it depends on how much your throwing at it all at once.

I have not heard of this... I will have to check it out cause it sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the info.

I use advanced task killer, juice defender, and power manager already and they do a sweet job of doubling the battery life. There were just a few other perks to rooting that I thought may be beneficial, but I guess it would not be worth it.

Wayne, I found that on day one and love it. I think the one I have is called Key Chain Organizer. I never carry my CVS or Kroger card with me, so that app is actually very useful for me.

If only Motorola had NOT put a freaking touchpad on a touchscreen phone, I would probably have a droid. :-/ I *HATE* how the keyboard is offset.

I would advise against using task killer apps. They can actually do more harm than good based on how android handles running applications. This is not a windows device and things do not run in the same way. If you are interested this is a great thread for information:

I have been thinking about rooting mine and will let you know how it goes once I take the plunge. I have read many people who like it and don't have issues, but I don't know anyone personally who has done it. If you want to try it I believe that there is almost no risk now because you can easily go back to stock 2.1 if you don't like it.

esabard, the link is no good for some reason.

I have used the task killer for a while, haven't had any issue with it so far.
The reason why I don't like rooting is the extra heat generated by the phone.
I do not trust overheated anything next to my ear/brain...

The link will work, but the site has been down for an hour or two. I was having problems with my droid rebooting every 3 days or so. I uninstalled the task killer app and the problem went away completely. Maybe I made a connection that wasn't true, not sure, but I will never install a task killer again.

As far as rooting causing heat issues, I think that the extra heat generated is only for those people that also over clock the CPU. Rooting does not necessarily change anything, only the access that you have to things. I am sure that few people will root without using a custom ROM and overclocking and all that fun stuff, but you don't have to do all those things.

Yes, the heat issue comes from overclocking. I have no interest in overclocking, because I do not think that it is necessary. I think they have a good product already, i just want to be able to tap into all the goodies that you can customize :D.

Just got my droid last night...storm just isn't cutting it for web apps and function...not compared to the droid so giving it a shot.
