OT - Freshwater question

Don't really want to bother signing up to a freshwater forum for 1 question, and i'm sure you guys/gals know this one, so here it is :)

I want to set up a small freshwater tank. The prices of driftwood are insane these days..

Would I be able to just pick up some nice pieces of wood from the lake (ontario, i live REALLY close) and boil them, then drop them in vinigar, and then add them to my tank?

Or.. do any of you know a cheaper source for driftwood? I only need something that'll look nice in a 20 gallon .

ooooooooooooooo...good question...but i think when i was talking about this with Mel one day, the answer was NO. not sure why...but maybe we will find out.....i went the safe way and bought a piece that was already cured.

For the most part you would want to use wood that can sink and has been in water. There are some types that we can find here in the country but nothing really local. A Louisiana swamp would be just the place to go picking. Anything you find in ontario would rot.

As far as insane driftwood and cheaper I have just the place to suggest to you.

My concern with seeking out local driftwood is the unknown exposure to pollutants. A few years back when I had the same question I did some internet reading and came across a lot of people that had collected from their local lakes or rivers and ended up having nothing but problems because of it. I'm sure there's good healthy stuff out there, I just have no way to test it to be safe so purchased at a local LFS. :)
