OT: Gardening, who grows their own food?

Compost at a 50/50 mix with screened native soil.. can use the commercial soil amendment if you are just starting to compost and don't have enough to get you started. Tucson soil is high alkaline, so the compost/amendment will help bring the pH down and help retain moisture.
I'm having good success with gha, too... :-/

What he said. If you go with stuff from
Home depot get omni in bags. It's far more aged and less hot than most if the cheap stuff. The sooner you can build the bed and let the soil age the better. Think about building sections that will have diffrent light intensities. Plan to have shade options. Not everything loves full sun. Setting up drip irrigation is easy and helpful. If you want to help even more look up companion gardening. A good start is a book called carrots love tomatoes. If you get tomatoes there are two types. Determinant vs indeterminent one lasts a year, the other will be multi seasonal if protected. Plan bigger than you think you need too. Things need room. If space is an issue grow up. Searching urban gardening will show you how to get the most yield out of the least amount of space. Last but not least try to get native soil that's Bermuda grass free. Total pain if you build over it or have soil contaminated with it.

We grow a monster garden, fruit & nut orchard and honey bees.

Not sure of the conditions in AZ, but your household organic waste makes the best soil you can ask for.

Haha Brett.
Thanks for the great info guys, I do plan on making a compost bin on my next day off.
I'm building 3 4x4x10" frames something to get us started. The area I'm placing them has these grass like weeds that pop up every summer. I was reading I should cover the area with cardboard or newspaper before dropping in the soil.
I was looking at a blog that recommended adding PVC on each end of the bed in case I need to cover the garden. Thanks for the growing up tips John, the beds will share a wall with my house so I can use the wall. Ill check out the Omni bags @ Home Depot. Ill keep you guys updated!
