OT: Hardwood floor refinishing

Has anyone had this done in their home? I was thinking about tackling the job myself but figured it was probably a better idea to have someone come do it. Looking to see if anyone local has had this done and who they have used. What's the going rate? $2/sqft?

We had ours done a couple of years ago and it can be a bit of a mess if you do not know what you are doing. I recall the going rate averaged around the 2.00 SF area back then but I would think if you are in that ballpark today it is fair and reasonable. No idea of names for you but keep checking with neighbors & friends in area and also your local home improvement store. They often have names and can steer you in right direction. Also ask about the finshes. There is one that is quick drying and although is more expensive it can save you a day or two of drying time and using that area of your home. Not sure of the safty on the tanks but they should be well covered due to all the dust created.
Good luck.

I have done it myself before its not that bad of a job you can rent the equipment at aubachon hardware. the edging is the hardest part. I would recommend doing it in the summer or spring when you can have doors and windows open for dust and fumes from the urethane.

I diddo Gary - I did it myself, albeit 10 years ago, and it was not bad at all. Fortunately, the mashines they have now are better as they suction dust while they do the work. If you are handy, I would do it myself (since you will still have dust to take care of even when you hire someone :)

I did it many many years ago - it wasn't so bad and the floors looked great when I got done. I would just recc. really checking the finish you choose on a substantial area. I actually had to redo the first room - I choose such a shiny finish, it looked like a bowling alley when I got done!

That bowling alley look is what you should shoot for!!! It tames down with time. I used a super thick spar marine urethane- tough as nails and extremely water resistent (good for a room a tank will be located in).
