OT: herps/dart frogs?

All,

Wondering if any of you reef keepers are also into herps, specifically dart frogs. Are there any good pet stores in the area for this hobby? Any local clubs or meets?

Ack's Exotic pets in Cicero usually has good selection. He hasn't had any lately but could always order for you.

Dwiz, is this going to be the plan for the woodie? It would be a very cool display for them, most zoo's and botanical gardens don't have containers that size.

I'll second Ack's. Great guy and pretty much the only place worth going in town for exotic pets. Sometimes he has good deals on fish/coral as well

I used to own dart frogs. They are awesome to own. I picked them up at the Country Max in Spencerport. One of the guys there breeds some snakes and various herps. I was into snakes for a while before my daughter was born, and thoroughly enjoyed the hobby. Dart frogs aside, the best herp shop in the rochester area is Captive Lifeforms in Spencerport (used to be in Henrietta) http://www.thereptileguys.com/

SHHH! It's a secret.

Honestly, current situation with the woodie aside, it's a hobby I've been interested in for years, just have never taken the leap. My wife is homeschooling our kids, and frogs seem like a really great key-in to "science class" (along with reef tanks of course). I'm thinking about starting up a small vivarium to keep a few frogs, just to see how we like it.

Looks like I'll have to check out ack's some time.

I went on vivarium binge for a few years, collecting frogs and building jungles. Extremely fun hobby that I plan to get back into.

i have been looking into them as well. we have a place in hamburg that has a large selection, and many other exotic reptiles. et tropicalfish and supplies the owner knows alot about them.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. To clarify, I'm near Syracuse, so suggestions in that general area will be best!

Would also love to get in touch with active hobbyists near Syracuse since talking to experienced folks face to face can be such a big help early in a new hobby.

I used to breed dart frogs. There is a breeder out of buffalo, aarons frog farm, and there are small local groups that meet bi yearly to promote the hobby. He is one of the best resources around IMO.

Got a chance to visit ack's last night. It was. . . Interesting. :D everybody should stop by that place. Not for the reef stuff (though they did have one tank with some nice corals at reasonable prices) but for everything else. I think that store out-does the average zoo as far as diversity.

Did you see the weird fox thing in the pen in the back? Or the "mini" alligators in the one big tank with the turtles?

I suppose it's a little like the pot calling the kettle black for a reefkeeper to say this, but who in their right mind would want those creatures in their home?

The fox is a fennec fox. Pretty interesting animals... supposedly they can be litter trained like cats and walked on a leash like dogs, but its still a whole 'nother world keeping up with a wild animal as a pet
