OT: Home Audio

Just plunked down a wad ' cash on a Pioneer Elite VSX-33 receiver (half off on clearance). Step 2 will be to upgrade to speakers. Right now I'm using halfway decent 5.1 Sony's (SS-MF515 are the front speakers, cant remember the model on the center/satellites, but they are in the same family)

As a mostly tech savy bunch, I'd love to hear some recommendations for a new 7.1 speaker upgrade :spin1:

Been looking myself and went with a Denon avr-1911 reciever, PSB for the surround and Polk for the sub. Bought the receiver and sub online and the PSB I am waiting on a local stereo shop to get. From what I was sold and read online PSB gives you pretty good audio at the price point(there is a shop in Syracuse, that sells them)

Which PSB line did you go with? The stereo shop here that carries them also seems to be a proponent of "monster cables", and that worries me ;)

Getting the alpha b1 for the fronts, the LR1 for the rears and the C1 for the center.

Whats wrong with monster cables, the ridiculous overpricing must mean there better, no?

Speakers are TOTALLY subjective, so get what sounds good to you. Without knowing more about what you're looking for it's hard to make any real recommendations. I like PSB for bang for the buck, and KEF makes a nice sub/sat package.

A few thoughts since you're going 7.1
- match the front 3 and the back 4... matching front to rear is less important
- be prepared for what is still a very limited selection of 7.1 movies
- HD audio is, IMO, a far better upgrade than is the additional 2 channels

That seems odd. No "audio shop" around me would touch those things. But FWIW, monster does typically offer great incentives for selling their stuff, so maybe they carry better gear but the person you spoke to was pushing monster stuff for commission?

Thanks Jackson. Just looking for some starting points. Going 7.1 (or 7.2 for that matter :)) is mostly for future proofing.... though by the time 7.1 is the standard the receiver will probably be outdated anyway. For what its worth, home theatre/movies is the top concern, less so for music since I just use 2 channel stereo for that

And hopefully comission is the only reason a knowledgable person ever pushes monster cables (though thats still not a person I want to deal with). I'll stick with my $3 monoprice cables ;)

Anyone familiar with the JBL ES series? They are having a really good clearance sale right now ($210 for ES90 towers vs $500+ elsewhere). Cherry color only but I'd deal with it

JBL ES90 with the ES20 sounds pretty good, a friend has them in their theater. But in that price base I would say Klipsch RF-42 series, the highs are a bit clearer than the JBL's.

Jay - feel free to stop over for a demo of my marantz receiver with paradigm speakers. Not 7.1, but wow! Like said before speakers are personal. I chose the paradigms over b&w's

Which Paradigms? The B&W 600 series were kinda lacking a bit. But we had one of the old Nautilus 802's, before they looked all goofy, in the lab and that thing was sick.

I might have to check those out Pascal. I've been reading up on the Polk Rti series, and they seem pretty good. Gotta find a place to listen in person... didnt see any when I was in Best Buy the other day

Woah! for real.I'd have to look into those then.I want to upgrade from bose.Just the front, center and sub.I have B&W 602's for rear,a great speaker for the $ imo.My old bose arent even in the same league as B&W.
