OT - Home Automation / X10

I've seen several folks on here talk about home automation and the use of X10. I would like to give this a try, so I can dim / control lights from either my PC or my Harmony One remote. I didn't get the Harmony with RF (20/20 hindsight) so I would need to use an IR device (IR-543?) so I could control lighting from my remote. I would also like to be able to control my thermostat from my PC and / or remote / iPhone. I've done a bit of research and it seems that is possible. Anyone have experience with that?

For lights not on an outlet, can I simply replace the light switch with an X10 capable switch? I would like to be able to control some lights from a switch or the remote.

I'm new to this stuff so any input or advice is welcome. I'm kind of looking for a good list of starter equipment to buy. Not looking to spend 10K on the setup, either.

I have the Harmony One remote, which also has a home automation programming section - I mainly just need to know what X10 stuff I need to get. I just need to get the IR543 or Insteon IRLinc.

Anyone familiar with Insteon? Seems like it may be better and the devices are compatible with X10 signals as well.

I had ten of those X10's that i couldn't give away, I think Rhett has them or did? There are several different type function models if I am correct.
