OT- Kicks for Guns

I just read about a cool local event this Thursday. I know a few of you are gun enthusiats - I'm not and don't know too much about them, but there is a great program going on down at the critrus bowl sponsored by 104.1 and the Monsters and a few of the 501st Legion will be in attendance as well. That means star wars storm troopers and I think one of the guys will even be in attendance as Batman this year.

The Kicks for Guns program is where you can turn in *any* firearm - no questions asked - and get a free pair of brand name shoes. This is a great program to try to get illegal guns off the streets and find a home for old retired ones not in use anymore.

Last year someone actually turned in a surface to air missile launcher to get a pair of reeboks for his daughter

This year its being held at the Citrus Bowl, Lot C Thursday August 14th from 7am to 1pm and 4pm to 8pm.

I know its hard to get out there on a weekday and even I have a few things planned so its only a maybe for me yet (I am looking to volunteer as a handler for those helping out in costume) but I thought I'd put this here in case any reefers would like to help out too!
 
Thats a good cause, but I wonder how many people actually bring guns in. If its a illegal gun its probably already in the hands of the wrong person and there not going to turn that in. lol
 
Yeah, I have to question how many "bad" guns in the hands of "bad" people actually get turned it. That "surface to air missile" was actually just the spent launcher tube for one. It cannot be reloaded and you can buy them off most any army/navy surplus store. Think of that as a large bullet shell.

What I do see every year is antique, rare and valuable collectibles get turned in. Have seen ww1 rifles, civil war era pistols and such every year. Stuff worth thousands. And EVERYTHING collected gets destroyed, no matter if its a broken bb gun or a $5000 cap and ball 1858 Remington pistol.

They said 250 last year...but I imagine not many of those were in criminals hands doing bad things and could have been auctioned off once donated for some sort of good cause. But it makes everyone feel better to think that 250 bad guns are off the street.

I think they should have kicks for criminals, bring a criminal and receive a new pair of shoes.
 
Sounds like a good way to get rid of broken, nonfunctioning guns and not really helping the illegal gun cause.

I wish it was in Tampa. I'd turn in a few broken ones! I wonder if you get one pair of shoes per gun or per person..
 
i listen to them everyday and the idea is to get any guns that people don't want anymore to stop possible crimes from happening. alot of people don't know what to do with there gun when they don't want it anymore. i've heard to many bad stories of kids getting shot because there parents don't want the gun anymore and forget they have it and the kid finds it and thats it. i'm not a big gun fan to start, but i do believe people have the right to procect themselves and their families. my dad keeps several large guns to protect hisself that he is disabeled now. great cause and i'll always support them for what they are doing.
 
I'm offering the same deal at my house! bring me your gun and I'll buy you a pair or shoes :P

DITTO LOL. I have 2 army duffle bags full of ammo at all times. Ya just never know when you might be hiding in the closet wishing you had one.

The intent behind these things seems good, but really they are just PR ploys. They have these gun turn in events in major cities all the time. Mostly they just get a bunch of junk/broken .22's and BB-guns. Then they go and say how many cops lives will be saved by getting the guns "off the street." Its mostly just BS. There are literally millions of guns in the US, and the number is ever increasing. People who need to get rid of guns should go to a FFL dealer. I just dont like the idea because it paints firearms in a bad light, to encourage people to turn them in for the purpose of "making society safer." Guns are not what makes society dangerous, its the criminals that make society dangerous. I can totally appreciate Christie's opinion on this because it is presented as a good cause, but in reality it is a ploy that makes life harder on gun owners by portraying guns in a bad light. Also, anyone that owns a gun without knowing how to use it or safely store it needs education on how to do so, not a free pair of kicks.

I really dont want to bash Christie's thread. I know she has the best intention in supporting this event. On paper it seems like a good idea. In practice these events have targeted inner city minority gun owners, as well as destroyed historical artifacts. Im not saying that the same will be true of this specific event, but it sounds like the same scheme. Gun owners have a hard enough time with restrictive laws, some of which are blatantly unconstitutional. We dont need further support of events which characterize guns as "bad" or "dangerous." Florida is fortunate enough to have extremely lenient gun laws, which do not infringe upon our rights beyond the federal laws. In the state of Florida, machine guns, as well as silencers and destructive devices are legal. I cant imagine what types of "illegal" guns will be brought in. There are illegal versions of these firearms, but in Florida they are legal as long as you pay the government the proper tax stamp amount. Being that even machine guns are legal, and ordinary guns dont have to be registered, I cant imagine they will bring in a single "illegal" gun.

Sorry for the rant. I hope anyone that goes has a good time, but try to see past the rhetoric, and notice what is really going on there.

If you really believe that any criminal is gonna come in and trade a gun illegal or not in for a pair of shoes then i got some land for sale for ya cheap. The only criminals turning in a gun for shoes broke into someone's house the night before and stole it lol.

reefs, drag racing, and guns....me too. lol. I dont think we could have picked three more expensive hobbies. If you ever want to get together I usually shoot on mondays, though I get out on a sat or sun sometimes. I usually goto the Ocala forest range, or a private farm near me. Pm me sometime.

With the price of race fuel these days, racing is just a pipe dream anymore lol. My shooting days are done for a while too. My right shoulder is held together with pins and screws, and i pulled a few loose last week. My right arm is going to be strapped to my stomach for atleast the next year until they replace the joint. I gotta wait that long because i did it the day after my wife quit her job to start full time nursing school. No insurance ;)
 
When i do get my shoulder back in one piece, i'll take ya up on the shooting. I love to go to the Ocala range and shoot every chance i get. Last time i was there i hit 6 out of 6 with my 30/30 lever action on a gator-aid bottle without ever letting it land, and it kicks like a mule lol. I used to take my .22 to quail hunt with my dad and could get as many or more than he could with his 12 guage lol.
