hello, i may be relocating to the memphis area for my job. i am not familiar at all with the city or area and need help locating the best places to possibly move to. looking for good school district, and a good neighborhood or town in the area. doesnt have to be in memphis but preferably within 30-45 mins. any help is appreciated thanks

Hey, we live in the Bartlett area and our 2 children attend Bon Lin Elementary which is a new Shelby County School. Its for k-5 and they are building another new school right beside it for 6-8 or 9. We like it here, the county schools are better than the city schools. Its nice in the Arlington area also, which is a little Northeast of Memphis.

We live downtown on Mud Island. We love it. Don't know about schools, as we don't have any kids. Especially if you'll be working downtown, check out the island. Its a long drive to Kermit's, though...

Ive been in collierville for 30yrs, great schools, both my kids go to the same one i did my sons 15 and daughters 22, both fish stores are 20min away, 30min from down town Memphis,

im in southaven miss right on the state line a great place to live good schools and good area .
taxes arent as high as in memphis also memphis taxes are way up there.
thats if you plan on buying a house
olive branch miss is also a good place

Collierville, Cordova, Germantown. All good places.
Southaven and Olive Branch, MS are just across the state line and are also good places to live.

thanks all...... may be transferring to the nucor steel plant. im pretty sure it is in down town memphis on the river. however ive never been to memphis so i am not sure on that. anyone heard anything about the plant? as for taxes and home prices i am sure they are cheaper than where i am now. im south of chicago and it is expensive to live here. just curious what are gas prices in the area?

I used to live in Downers Grove so I know exactly where you are coming from .... My 1 bedroom apartment here costs about 100 less than what i was paying to spilt the rent with a friend up in Chicago .... BTW buy me a chili dog from Portillo's and fed ex it to me b4 you leave

I was in Chicago about 2 weeks ago and the gas prices in Memphis are about $0.30 less a gallon than in Chicago. Real estate is also much less in Memphis than in Chicago.

its 3.26 a gallon for regular here and im 45 mins south of down town. just trying to see the difference. its been a long time since we have paid less than 3 bucks a gallon. ill bring chili dogs for everyone....if i remember!

i know collierville's zip is 38017, some one give him OB, & southaven, so he wont have to look them up from where hes at now,

the link i gave him is for southaven 38671
and he can just put the town name in dont have to have the zip with this site

Disclaimer: My Opinion
Memphis is an evil and miserable city, and I wouldn't recommend it for children at all.

Mud Island or Walls/Horn Lake may be your best bets if someone can comment on the schools in those areas. Downtown is actually one of the safer place in Memphis proper and it'd be a 10-15 minute commute to Nucor. Horn Lake would be a 15 minute commute as well.

The plant itself is located in a remote industrial park in the far corner of the state. Less than a mile from AK and I think less than a mile from MS but could be 2-3. Any route to the plant takes you through bad neighborhoods. It's 6-7 miles from the restaurant where a SWAT van was broken into (3 months ago) and several guns stolen from it while on camera and during lunch time. I would recommend Horn Lake, although typically people speak down upon the schools in Mississippi compared to Tennessee.

I lived in Midtown for 8 months and Walls for 3. I plan to never live near Memphis again. I don't know how bad it is in Chicago, but it's quite annoying to be asked "Hey man, got a dolla?" 3 times in 1 evening while just trying to get gas and dinner. I recommend carrying a gun and not carrying cash.

Good Luck

well he said he was working in memphis
the places we told him to look at for a house are good places to live its not in memphis
and the places we told him about have just about all you would need .
and as for bad area well memphis does have alot .
the county schools are better then the city schools .
the schools in southaven and olive branch are good schools better then horn lake schools and a better area to live then horn lake for the most part.
