OT - New Car

Does anyone know about purchasing a car out of state? There seem to be better deals in PA and I am going there for about 6 weeks.

im interested in an answer for that as well.....since there are no Smart dealerships around here...and the 2 closest are in KY and GA

Gsusfreak. I think your issue is a little easier to deal with. I think you can ge away with driving from KY to TN register it in the state. I look forward to an answer as well, but I am looking for a way to drive the car for a few weeks in PA and then drive through MD, WV, VA, and TN without getting pulled over.

Why don't you call the dmv and tell them you are planning on picking up a car while out of state and what needs to be done? That way you would be sure. I can't remember what my bro had to do one time, but he flew up to PA to buy a used car from a private party and drove it back home to Florida. This stuff happens, and they should be able to tell you what you need to do. I don't think it would cost much since it isn't a new car. You may have to pay some TN taxes when you register in state, but nothing you wouldn't do if you bought one locally, I don't think.

If you buy a car out of state what you have to do depends on if you are financing or paying cash. With a finance deal the dealership has to collect your state taxes. If you pay cash you can skip taxes at that time and sign a form stating you are taking the car out of the state within 48 hours. Once you get back to TN you will have to pay the taxes to register and get tags for the car.

If you know what type of car you want and what you want to pay for it you can have a dealer buy you one in a auction. That is what I did with my van. I could look up my dealer that I used he is in Knoxville but most dealers can do it the auctions are online now so they do not have to be there. There are a lot of program cars that go to the auctions with 20-30K miles on them. If you look at a KBB price you should pay 1500 to 2k less then what it says. I use to sell cars and still would make money on that. If a person sells it for what KBB says dealership price is you normally are paying too much. By the way I would not fix the other car.

I have decided to at least put off buying the car. I didn't want to feel rushed. Thanks for all of your help.

Kevin
