My father in law found this guy this past weekend. I didn't think I got any good shots. It was at an extreme angle, almost directly above my head in a patio umbrella. Hard to get in frame, and nearly impossible to hold in frame at the distance... Coolest spider I've ever seen. Canon xTi w/ Sigma 150mm f4.0.

That is WICKED awesome! About how big is he?

Since we're on the subject, check out what I found on my deck one day.

I only have a 6MP Sony compact digi camera, so that's the best I could do. Apparently it's a Laphria marginata, or "killer fly" which kills other insects.

Good pics Gary. I don't think I've ever seen that kind of spider. I'm impressed that spiders are the only bugs that I can think of that seem to have a "face".

He's about the size of a quarter in diameter (picking some point between the end of his legs in standing position and the main joint). I had never seen anything like that.

I'm guessing the fly is slowly making a meal of the yellow jacket? I love nature. I was just watching an ant trail the other day anoticed that everytime an ant comes across another ant in the trail, they stop and 'sniff' the other ant down. Some just buzzed passed others, but the trajectory and speed was always different when they got to another ant (if they didn't stop altogether).

way to wicked Gary...My biggest fear is spiders but I must say it's kinda kool looking...have you researched what kind it is yet?

oops..I see now what it is but will have to research it too to see what it's all about and how rare they are cause I've never seen of it and we watch alot of discovery and animal planet
