OT...Plasma, LCD or DLP TV

Are the bulbs for DLP sets all the same? Or do you have to buy specific bulbs for each set? Are their hours of use roughly the same?

Is there any way to find out how much a replacement bulb costs for each specific set (that is, if they are made as specific bulbs for each set).

Vamp it does bring down the viewing ability. Look at the actual brightness measurements of them and compare them.

When I read this thread I assumed a new TV of each type of the same quality/resolution, size etc. I have no idea what type/size/age you have at home that you are comparing. I used to fix these things for a living for many years. I know way more about them then I ever want to know.I get into the TV's and home theatre even more then I do the reef. I upgrade my main TV at least twice a year. I am actually picking up my latest upgrade tomorrow.

DO some reasearch out there. All you need to do is look forf the unbiased sites. Obviously if you go to DLP.com they will say it is best. If you start finding the neutral ones you will see the same thing over and over. The only positive of DLP is the size for price.

They are big, the bulbs burn out, the bulbs are hundreds of dollars, etc.

I am not trying to slam your TV I am just stating facts. The LCD's will last well over 20 years with none of the bulb BS. The bulb and the light area in those DLP's get dirty. If you smoke or you have pets or dust it will get on the bulb etc.

The only drawback LCD had was the response time (sports and fast movement) and how big the screens were. . Both of these things are fixed now. Sharp has been kicking out new larger LCD screens for a while now.

So sorry Vamp but the price has EVERYTHING to do with it. It is DLP's main selling point.

Ted

I must agree with alot of this. DLP is still a projection TV. Right there you will not have as sharp of a picture as an LCD or a Plasma. Those are just the facts. I just purchased a 32" samsung LCD. I went into best buy with the sole purpose fo buying a DLP as I was amazed with them for over a year. When I got into the store and had the models next to each other the picture was better on the LCD hands down.

I think it is a matter of opinion really. Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses. At the higher end, I think they all look good. Ultimately, window shopping televisions was helpful for me.

I was in the market last holiday season and picked up a 32" Samsung LCD. It has a 3000:1 contrast ratio, which was uncommonly high for LCD at the time. Contrast ratio is an often-overlooked spec. People have traditionally focused on resolution instead.

This is also a marketing ploy to a certain extent from what ive read. The human eye can only tell the difference to something around the 2000:1 contrast ratio. So anything over that is just bells and whistles.

Doug was that the horizontal output tube or the high voltage rectifier?

Bleh I need to stop I am dating myself now too. When I first started fixing TV's I was carrying caddies or tubes in my truck too. Damn how times have changed.....

I really enjoy seeing people talking about things they have no idea about. LCD are junk black is not black, black is grey...the picture is decent, because of that and the fact that you can tilt them more then 20% which will ruin a plasma, I use 2 in my master bath, and 1 in my bedroom, all 3 are JVC LT37X887 37" again...decent picture...Plasma, AWESOME...plasma is diferent each pixel is lit...unlike LCD which is backlit...my plasma is an LG MU-60PZ95V 60" which replaced a 42" LG 42PC3DC....and DLP just sucks, SED(Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) & LCoS are much better systems then DLP

And this as a first post.....

I bought my LCD Project 2yrs ago this December, I knew going in the bulb would need replacement every so often, but so far I haven't noticed any quality difference...

I did a quick search on google and I see prices like 200-300 bux is that right? Pretty expensive, considering the tv cost 2500 bux... gez

plasma's are not a good picture at all. I run into these tv's every day for problems with there pic on the analog ch.the LG is really bad and the hd you can see a reflection and ghosting of the words. I run on trouble calls every day that some person just got a new HD box and there pic looks like poo mostly on plasma's not just LG all of them. dlp lcd are good pics.

im sure some one has said this but the LCD screen's will burn pictures in the screen but i beleive they have fixed this problem.

You got it backwards, Plasmas and projection Tv's do this. not LCD's.

Anone gets their sets today?

I'm starting to have second thoughts when a friend of mine told me that any analog signal I watch through the set is going to REALLY look BAD!! He claims to have seen it himself on some newer rear projection HDTV sets.

Can anyone tell me if this is necessarily true? Is it dependent on the type of set? Any further info would be appreciated befoe I spend the $$

Unfortunately its very true. Running a non HD feed through a HDTV = uber crappy picture. You eventually get used to it I guess.

I donno about it being 'uber crappy' it might not be as good as HD but there are so many programs in HD... I definately wouldn't let that effect you buying an HDTV

Lets put it this way, its a much worse pictre then when I had a regular TV. Its definetly not a great picture. Dishnetwork has about 30 HD channles, from what I understand thats the most available. Direct TV has a measely 8 + your locals. Comcast has a bit more then that.

So theres a decent amount, but its clearly not the standard yet.

I believe Direct TV has more HD than that and they claim to be getting 100+ more by June. I think y'all in Chicago can get local HD alsofrom Direct TV, but out here in the sticks (Rockford) we cannot for another year or so.

I called them last week and they told me they have 8 channels + locals. I was going to switch to them since their HD is much cheaper then DishNetwork. But once I found out they have no HD channles I scrapped that.
