OT- Plasma TV Help

I won a 42" Panasonic Plasma TV from my work and me and my VP were talking today and were going to set a day to pick one out and he was looking online and found one shipped to my door for $1350...Don't know the model nor could I be picky.

My issue is I have a 65" WS HDTV and a 61" Phillips.

I'm keeping my 65" and I'm guessing I'll get rid of my 61" but I told him I'd look for a 50" and kick in the extra money because I don't really want to give up almost 20 inches. Has anyone seen any 50" deals around? (online or local)

Would even be willing to do a refurb. as long as it's a reputable company. Not really interested in spending much more money on it since so please don't throw out a bunch of expensive ones that have better reviews because honestly, I'm pretty happy with my current 2.

Well if it causes that much of a problem I will take it.

I have a 19" tv made before 1990 with rabbit ears.
I get channels 2, 5, 11.
4, 9, 30, and 46 do not come in.

I'm in Steve's boat too:D So, no sympathy from me:lol:

I do have an empty wall down in the basement for a 42" TV though;)

i would purchase one via Costco. Their return policy cant be touched. The guy at the counter told me within reason they will take any of the tv's they sell back upto 6 years or so later if it breaks or you are not 100% happy with it. And after that time they will give you partial credit torwards a new one.

Not going to get much of a plasma for 1300.
Been doing a ton of research on HD's lately.
Get a DLP. They dont get burn-in like plasmas do. Just as good, if not better picture too.
Try an open-box mitsubishi from BB or Circuit city.

IMO, my DLP is nicer than regular LCDs

if you dont care about hanging it on the wall, go DLP for sure

50-56" are between 1299 and 1700 depending on the sales at best buy, circuit city, etc

Don't forget two or three hundred bucks every year or two for bulb replacement.

Plus, DLP only has about a 100 degree viewing angle - plasma and LCD are at 180

Plasma burn in is a thing of the past. You should be able to find a 50" plasma for $1700. Panasonics are a great choice and one of the higher rated plasmas. I have a Toshiba that has panny glass and can be found for around $1600 for a 50". The Vizio's are nice too - I got one for my dad last year and it looks great - the only drawback is that it doesn't have discrete inputs so programming a universal remote can be difficult.

If you want more informatio you can check out www.avsforums.com They even have a local thread in the HD programming section.

im holding pretty steady around 140 degrees hl-s5086w samsung

basically at my place if you have to sit in the 180 degree couch that means you arent cool enough to watch tv

I intentionally put a couch out of viewing range in case my friend brings any dorks over

Dlp bulbs only burn out ever 3-4 years. With normal viewing.
Buy a insurance plan from best buy or cc and you are money in the bank.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A TV THAT IS 1080i OR BETTER YET, 1080P COMPATIBLE!!
A 720 IS WORTHLESS COMPARED TO A 1080.

Only the most expensive plasmas are 1080P. You have to remember that the resolution of the screen (720p, 1080i, or 1080p) is only as good as the source material. Right now, there is no source material for TV viewing that is 1080P - and there probably won't be for a long time. OTA stations all show 720p or 1080i - as does cable and satellite. If you have an xbox, PS3, HD-DVD, or Blu-ray then you can take advantage of 1080P.

Otherwise, there is no discernable difference between 1080i and 720p - in fact, some argue the 720p is better for sports, action movies, etc. because it is progressive scan (all 720 lines refreshed at once) vs. interlaced (half the lines refreshed at once).

I think you'll be in good shape with a 50" plasma at 720p.

Good luck.

I personally can't stand my PIP...I have it on my 61" and NEVER use it.

However, on my 65" it's got Picture On Picture so it actually cuts the screen in 1/2 so since it's a widescreen it works out nicely. The only thing that sucks about it is that it doesn't work in HDTV
If you're going to split the screen you have to turn it to the normal broadcast station

I can't figure out how to work PIP, so I don't use it. Mine's the same as yours Justin, it splits the screen in half and a couple other ways.
