OT - Question For Fellow Gun Enthusiasts

Just wondering if anybody out there knows of any good rifle ranges. I need a place to shoot my AR-15, looking for a fairly long range. I heard something about a gun club in Sycamore that allows outsiders in on the weekends. I would assume its an out door range and not sure if they would be open in the winter. If anybody knows of anything please let me know, I am so anxious to shoot this thing for real and get some good sighting in.

It sucks around here, that's why I haven't bought a rifle yet. I go to maxons in DES plaines to shoot my xd-40. It has rifle/shotgun lanes but they are only 50'! Lol. WhY's the point in shooting a rifle 50'. Which AR did u get. I'm assuming since u want a long range it shoots a .223.

Ya, I go to GAT Guns for my 9mm, but they don't allow AR's in there. Last year I picked up a RRA AR-15, yes, its a .223/5.56. Its fully tactical, 4-Rail floating Handguard, adjustable buttstock, etc... You know, for when the end of the world comes.

Maxuim's in DesPlaines will let you shoot a rifle indoors there. If you want an outdoor range, you have to go to Kankakee or Bristol, WI. You need to call the ranges. Most require frangible ammo. You may want to anonymously check websites to see if these guns are legal in IL, before you go there & have it taken away (& more).

assault rifles are legal as long as they are not automatic ie/ 3 round burst or full auto. its nothing more than a semi automatic rifle, it just looks MEAN!!

like casual reefer said, they are legal, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get one, well, the way I did. They are not legal in cook county I believe. And actually you can legally own a full auto weapon, but it takes alot of paperwork and then they extensively look into your past, and then they would probably pull all my stuff.

Des Plaines isn't to bad of a drive, maybe I will check that out. Kankakee or Bristol is a little far, but I will check those out as well. Anybody else go anything?

You're fine in Cook County, just not Chicago. And that ordinance will be going away very soon, too. Washington DC had the same ban on firearms that Chicago does. DC just lost the case in the Supreme Court. Chicago will either lift the ban voluntarily, or will also loose their case.

Maxon will let you shoot whatever. I brought my Mosin there and it was fine to shoot, again though it is only a 50' range. This is why I bought a ruger 10/22 so I can shoot it at the indoor ranges in the area. Maxon is a little pricey compared to other ranges.

compguy, nice 'when sh_t hits the fan' piece.
i was wondering the same, i just move here from AZ...and yet to get a FOID.
i tried visiting the local DMV, but got decline for a state ID, they "stated" i need to get a IL driver's license too?!?
i originally wanted a state id for the foid and keep my AZ for my CCW (since it has reciprocity with 33 states, including IN & MI).
anyways...i looked up the facts on the state's website and state ID card is made for people who don't drive, seniors, kids, and just ID....so will try again at different place.
long story short...can't wait to shoot...don't like waiting for friends.
maybe see you out there at the range when i'm legal!

The place in Ottawa is called Buffalo Range. You bring your own junk to shoot and leave it there cause it's in a giant gravel cory. Let's keep this legal ok~dc

Thats really what I was looking for, a gravel pit, someone that maybe knew someone that shot at one, that was hopefully open this time of year. I had talked to a cop out here by me once and asked him where I could shoot, as far as laws go, and he said if I wanted to I could shoot in my back yard, as long as there is somekind of backdrop, you know, some where safe. So I'm not shooting towards a neighbors house or something, he recommended talking to a farmer near my house and asking them. I guess its legal to shoot, he said they would probably end up getting called out, but would just check my credentials and go on there way. But I don't want to **** off people I live near.

The sight is an EOTech Holographic Sight, alot of military and police are beginning to use them as there standard sights. EOTech also makes a flip up magnifier so it will turn it into a long range site as well, and it flips up right out of the way, so no need to fumble around trying to take it on and off. Here is there website if you want to learn more about them. They are very nice, nothing to line up, just aim using the floating holograph.

nice...cool, that is always fun...i always thought illinois is a firearm unfriendly state!
they did a good job conditioning my friends here, i had a friend who didn't want to hold or touch any piece because of his fingerprints!..haha..i thought that was the funniest.

Buffallo has a gravel pit as well as pistol and rifle ranges. I've been there a couple of times with people firing full auto. Its a fun place to go and fire off a ton of rounds, eat some lunch, and fire off a ton more. :D
