OT: Storm Shutters

Bryan,

I too have tought of using similar fabrics. There was a sail making shop in town that i belive was getting into huricane fabrics. I like that they allow light in and you can roll them and they are light weight. I really think 3/4" plywood is better, but a pain to deal with a heavy when you have to put it up.

When I leaved in Clearwater I had plywood for all the windows and could make my house into a fort. (-: But it was very depressing living in a cave. I should have made some port in the plywood to see out. (-:

For my current house, I do not plan to do anything to the windows. I believe by code our windows should be rated to 110 mph winds (I know this does not stop the depris and 2x4s, but I am willing to take that risk.)

Living where we live I believe tornados spun off from huricanes may be the real issue and when you are talking tornado strength wind I don't care what you have on the windows our house will be ripped up. )-:

Hurricane film is another option. Not sure how much it is but I have been thinking about it for my larger windows and sliders.

what about plastic hurricane sheets.they sell a multilayered lexan(kind of like cardboard the way its made) thats lightweight and impact resistant.

i know it isnt cheap, just figured id throw out the option.plus added bonus you get to watch the debris fly at you :)also whatever you buy,do it soon.once there is a threat of a storm all the stuff gets bought up quick.

Generator... $800
Natural Gas conversion kit - $250
Transfer switch - $300
Electrician - $200
Cart for Gen - $100
Covers for windows - $1400

Sitting in you Air Conditioned house watching your fish swim, drinking a margarita while all heel breaks lose around you - Priceless

 The only reason to cover a window is to protect from flying debris. Check it out. Ask your insurance provider. Most of the damage in a home that's not totaled comes from windows being broken by flying debris, allowing the rain to pour in.

Bryan, buy a set of TV rabbit ears and enough cable to get them outside, so you can watch TV after the storm passes. Also if you have land line phone service, buy a cheap cord phone (non-wireless). The phone service never went down during all the storms since I've been here.

If u can get an electrician to do that for $200 u are getting a very good deal! Couple years back when i had my transfer switch installed it was $600. I called 3 or 4 companies and they were all similar in price. I only regret not getting a switch start instead of the pull start generator.

WHAT... you telling me that my FIOS service will be down after a storm!

Inconceivable!

I plan on getting a copper phone line, some day, but none too soon.

Actually (I work for Verizon so don't kill me) as long as your backup battery (FIOS) holds a charge you will be able to talk on the phone (federal regulation) and if you have a generator you can always plug it in......

Whoot!!!

I was guessing $200 for the transfer switch installation.

The Gen I am looking at is Pull Start, no electric start option on it :-(

but for $800 for a 10Kw, I think I can pull start :-)

only advantage i see with the toggle switch over the pull start is if i am not home my wife or daughter could start the generator.

Are u only planning on running 1 small room with window a/c on that 800.00 generator?? A generator big enough to power ur entire house with a/c is gonna cost 10 x that.

Thats good to know....800.00 is doable...heck buy 2 800.00 gens and use one just for a/c and the other for fridges and tanks.

Does the huricane film stop debris from breaking the window?

Film would be nice and it is always up.

Mike - I have tarps and duct tape to keep the rain out after the storm has passed. I just think that houses are being better built after the code rules put into place after Huricane Andrew. But you are right a window broken and rain coming in and I can have some serious damage. Not to mention, I don't think the insurance company pays for rain damage unless you have flood damage. )-: Insurance what a scam.

Cheers,
Chris
