OT - Sunset on another world

Very Nice Doug, thanks for sharing. Are your grad filters also Singh-Ray? From your first post I couldn't exactly tell.

Thanks Louis.

Yeah, all of them are Singh-Ray so that first shot is using over $400 worth of filters.

I have a 2 stop and 3 stop soft, a 3 stop hard, and a 3 stop reverse.

That's excellent, I am in prep to purchase my first ND grad from Singh-Ray, and I am really excited about it considering how often I use the grad. filter in Lightroom 2. I don't know why, but I had just never considered using a stacked Hard and Soft setup like that, great idea!

Necessity is the mother of invention. :) I needed more than 3 stops and stacking the two helped keep the transition from being too harsh. I don't generally start with a plan on this stuff; just start shooting and handle the conditions as they come.

Cheers

If only I knew what you were talking about. :D

Great shots. My favorite is the first one from today's set.

I was thinking the same thing. I have been here nodding, pretending I understood what they were talking about. :)

Here's a couple more:

Must have been pretty calm waters upfront to have a 3 sec exposure. Very nice pic BTW. Could you maybe elaborate on the filters used?

That's a bit of an optical illusion. The foreground is about 10' higher than the surf so it was only getting water about every 5th or 6th wave.

The dramatic color is due to a very heavy application of a Singh-Ray Gold-n-Blue polarizer. You can read more about it here:

and here:

That filter, as far as I know, is only available from their website and is built to order. B&H carries the split-grads, but that's it.

What kind of lens mount do you use? Did you go with circular ring filters or a drop in modular set?

For polarizers I use screw-in. They're just easier to manage. My split-grads I use are the modular variety but I don't use the mount. I just hand hold them in front of the lens. (and have a few pictures of my finger tips to prove it) :)
