I agree 110%, you get what you pay for. Remember this will be on your body for the rest of your life. I am super fussy about who inks me, having had a couple bad experiences in the past and luckily at the beginning of my Tattoo collecting stage.

My all time favorite is Lowrider Tattoo in Fountain Valley, there are other LR shops but I only have experience with this one. I have been tattooed by 2 guys in there, Joseph and Jose. Joseph is a great guy, he has been taught by one of the best which is Jose, also Jose's brother is pretty good too. Joseph and the other guys do awesome work, but if you want the best then Jose is the one to go to, his minimum is $1000, although this might have changed, but the other guys are way cheaper, way cheaper...hehe.
I like Mr Cartoon's style but dont have the time for the 2 year waiting list or the $4000 it would have cost me to have my ribs inked, went to LR and Jose did it for less than half that with a better style.

Oh and they have a Fish Only tank in there too....

Most places work by the hour, LR will quote you the complete price. I would go to different shops, ask them to see their books and then decide. I have seen some bad scratchers out there charging crazy prices but its not worth it.

Another store to check out with amazing work for not much coin is Ink Fiend in Alhambra. Remember also if its a bigger piece then get the outline first and pay for that, then when you have more money go back and get more done till its finished. I know of loads of people who do it that way.

thanks PHotobret

thats some good advice i went to a shop yesterday that is kinda known for being over priced and he quoted me 500 for the pice i want. my first pice they quoted me 240 and i ended up getting it done for 180. I might just have to make the drive out to palm springs my sisters artist told me he would do it for 300 and it will take about 4 to 5 hours :(

Ok no worries, a shop may seem over priced but in some cases it reflects the work. The design is the same but its the way its done that matters as no two people are the same. Its all about good line work, good color and shading. 4-5 hours is a nice sitting.. hehe, ooh its gonna tickle something great.

ive got about 70 hrs of work done on me and i think the minimal cost thing is just BS.average cost w/ a good artist is from $100-150 an hour.ive had ONE of the best artist work on me and i didnt pay $5000.it suck rick walters closed his doors at bert grimms but its outer limits now.that was one of the oldest tattoo shop in the us.
anyhow dont get caught up in the hype of over paying for a tattoo because of someones name but for his work.

Again I agree, Mr Cartoon is good but its not worth the $$$, ok so he's tattooed some celebs, big whoop. I pay for work hands down, if its good I'll pay but have never paid more than $150 an hour and probably wont either. Apparently quite a few 2ink artists are suffering because of the economy. The reason LowRider has a minimum is that he only does big pieces and lets this take up his time, letting the other guys handle the smaller artwork. He also does not quote hourly but for the final piece. 12 hours on my ribs with a good tip worked out to $145 an hour.

I have spent many hours studying people's work before making a decision and so far so good.

on the flip side.do you know a good dr that removes tattoo's.i have a peice on my neck i want off.its really good work but with me getting older maybe its a good idea to get it taking off. i wont it to be if i wear a long sleeve shirt you wouldnt even know i have tattoo's.

The only people I know are Dr Tattoff, I know of people who where involved with gangs having them removed by the state as part of a rehab program but somehow I dont think that would be available to people with professional work.

I love tattoo's! Ive been having the itch for more work for a few years now. I think im gonna get some more work in the next few months :D

As far as free tattoo removal, I think it's only given to gang members, and law enforcement etc. From what ive heard, tattoo removal is very expensive, painfull and takes a long time. I heard it hurts more that getting the initial ink..

i did that at ucla in the early '90's w/ a tattoo i had on my hand and did 2x's and never went back.its when they first started that program and damn that sh*t hurt.it was easier to just cover it up and less painfull.

photobret,we should post a bunch of pic of our work and everybody will get the "itch".we can get chair time just with "finders fee":D

The Skull in the ditch was done by Mikey Sarrat outta PHX. Great guy and awesome artist.

You should check out goodfellas tattoo in orange. I got a tat done by larry there, I liked work I saw from him and was happy with my end result. Another guy you should definitely check out is steve soto, the owner of the place, he's good, especially with portraits. I've also heard good things about bad influence tattoo in fountain valley. The owner(can't remember his name) and scorpion do good work as well, I've seen some of their work done on friends and their portfolios, good stuff.
