OT-The world is full of worthless dirtbags!

For all the dog owners out there, ditch the "Beware of Dog" signs and put one up that merely states "Dog On Property". If it ever comes to a lawsuit for a dog bite, the beware part of the sign indicates you thought your dog was a danger. Merely stating you have a dog on the property puts you in a better legal position.

Times are tough financially now and as a result the thieves and dirt bags are out in force. 99% of the time they know the law better than the rest of us because they are such a part of it. We have a rental house in our area that is a unbelievable magnet for drug dealers and crack heads...we have been fighting with the owner for years to screen the tenants to no avail. I made sure my husband walked Otis past the house and had him give Otis the "on guard" signal...he was his protective best, growling and snarling at the dopers as they were moving in...he even does this "smile" thing we taught him...raises up his lips and shows nothing but teeth and fangs. I don't think they'll be knocking on my door any time soon. The best defense is a good offense.

My choice for protection is a 100 pound German Shephard and a Mossberg 590. I keep it unloaded so as not to wear out the spring but something tells me that cocking it once would be enough to make someone think twice about coming in. The nice thing about a shotgun is that if you load it with bird shot it probably won't kill from a distance and it most likely won't penetrate a wall, endangering people in the next room.

OK, so I have a 357 Springfield Armory semi auto. I keep the clip loaded and in the pistol at all times with one in the chamber. I always keep it in its holster, period. Not too thrilled with the safetys on it but it's what it's. Should I keep the round out of the chamber to keep from wearing out the spring you guys are talking about or keep the clip out of it until I use it?

The spring is at the bottom of the magazine. It is what pushes the rounds up out of the magazine and into the chamber. Having a round in the chamber does not affect the spring. Storing the magazine with ammunition in it constantly keeps the spring compressed and wears it out over time. The result is that the spring starts to run out of "power" by the time you hit the last round in the magazine and sometimes won't correctly feed the last round.

I didn't know this was as much of an issue with handguns. I have a shotgun and it has a much longer spring, like 20" or something. Mine is actually kind of worn out because the guy who had it before me always kept it loaded. Everyonce in a while it won't properly feed my last shell.

A truly wonderful gun for home protection is the Ruger Super Redhawk that takes.44 Remington loads, has a 2.5" barrel and is comfortable in the hand.
Semi-automatics are nice, but the average person loads it up, jacks one in the chamber and then forgets about it until a "Oh Fudge" moment comes up. After the first shot your dirty, long unused gun gets a empty round stuck while ejecting and people panic instead of remembering how to clear it. For the average person, a double action revolver is more forgiving and reliable. I own semi's also, but I break them down at least every other month and give them the once over.I'm probably like a lot of other LEO's and former military personnel who's lives often depend on the condition of our weapons, we make sure everything is in good working order. .

Wow, this took on a life of its' own while i re-entered society this afternoon. Got the window fixed and the check for my sat receiver. I am going to do the motion sensor flood lights this weekend so it's up before the holidays. fortunately none of my neigbors driveways border mine so there should be no issue if the motion sensor goes off because no one should be on my freakin' lawn or driveway anyway.

I am leaning toward the revolver for simplicity sake. My wife grew up with a cop for a best friend. She has fired pistols but I was thinking maybe we would get his and hers revolvers so we can compete against each other on the range. She finds it a little scarry but she's on board and agrees that maybe the way the world is heading it's a good idea.

Anyway, I didn't get to the Smoke 'n' Gun today, too darned busy. Besides I don't have the money this minute. Maybe in January or early Feb we should be completely squared away. Next weekend we are headed down to Tam's mom's house. There is a place in Kewanee called Farm King and they have an awesome selection of handguns, rifles, and shot guns at what appeared to be good prices. They had Colt, Beretta, and Ruger as well as a few others. I'm going to check out a few gun owner forums to look at reviews from people that own them.

Thanks all and I am glad this stayed civil. Imagine me, a tree hugger with a gun. Who'd a thunk it.

Wow Brian, I think I'll have to take you up on that. Let's plan for it some time after the immediate hoidays when I know everyone is busy.

Thanks again.

Not a problem. I hate people who think they can take whatever they want. I swear the world really is filled with dirtbags. This state should allow a cc license. I would and I am sure lots of people would think twice about what they are doing because the outcome may not be the free ticket they wanted.

You have a car -- a job -- gadets -- and a wife you love -- and your angry enough to get a gun over something so petty? Did you miss your capachino that morning?

Dude count your blessings...

Nothing inspires fear like a crazy man with a fireman's crowbill axe.

I hate cappachino. Starbucks is a blight on this planet.

I couldn't care less about the sat receiver. If it were about the posession I'd agree with you, that would be petty. It's the broken window and the brazen lack of respect for someone elses work. It's about the possibility that had my wife caught the guy in the act, or happened upon him she could have been hurt. When I used to be a punk I was a punk that respected other peoples well being and property. Although I've not had to use my old motto for about 30 years i always believed in "Never hurt first, make sure you hurt back worse."

As stated before the dirtbag can have the radio. I turned it off and it's serial number needed for activation is noted aas still being mine and being stolen. Hopefully he'll sell it to one of his worthless dirtbag buddies and when he is told it is stolen that issue will work itself out.

Peace and Love, but guns help to enforce peace.
