OT: Thinking of getting a dog?

Well, I am thinking about getting a dog for my girlfriend and I and have no idea what I want to get? My parents have chihuahuas, but they are kind of semi-aggressive towards guests, but...

Here are my requirements:

-Has to be a small dog
-Has to be a dog for a guy because I am a guy (mostly a dog for me, and not so much my girlfriend  )
-Has to be a friendly dog to other people

I really don't know what kind of dogs are out there? can you give me some ideas that would meet these requirements?

Thanks everyone,
Sonny

can always get a jack russel terrier or maybe even a boston terrier. Both can be alittle hyper at first but when they settle down great pets

I would never get someone else a dog unless you know they want one, or specific one.

I gave my ex a small chihuaha dog, and it was only with her for 5 months...she really didnt like small dogs. She likes big dogs.

Just be sure you know they are down to take care for em and what not...

They are suckers pretty much for any dog when they are puppies though....lol

Chiuhauhas are very protective for a little dog, we take our everywhere even to work everyday and we get a lot of people coming to see us, but once he sees they are cool he calms down and wants to be your friend, they need to socialize alot, mines loves everybody and likes ti climb on Sam's shoulders. They are true companions.

Hey Sam,

Whats up dood? I've been wanting to get a dog for a while now, but if I get it with my girlfriend its only a plus if she enjoys it too. I'm mostly getting it for myself, haha.

I am really thinking about something like a jack russel or a miniature pincher, thats what I am really looking for something around those two dogs.

Thanks alot guys, do you guys have any experience with either?

The chihuahuas my parents have are very protective at first, but it takes like three or four visits from a person, for my dogs to get use to them.

English Bulldog. Loyal Dogs with great personality. Had one for years as a kid. They do have health issues when they get older though.

The French Bulldog is very "In" right now too... esp. in black.

What kind of energy level do you want in a dog, and what kind of time do you have to spend with the dog? Jack Russells are VERY energetic and need lots and lots of exercise and attention. If they don't get it, they WILL find something else to do... usually a new fun game involving something you really, really like or just bought.

I love my corgi, but they are also high energy dogs. A scottish terrier will be more laid back. Mini pins are cute, but tend to be either aggressive or fearful. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, if well bred, will be completely friendly and non-aggressive, and not highly energetic.

Ultimately, though, your best bet is to contact a rescue group and tell them exactly what your situation is and what you are looking for. Rescue dogs are fostered in a home, so they know their temperaments and can match a specific individual dog to you, regardless of breed.

Sup Sonny...Ha, If its mostly for you then I guess thats a plus.

Freddys dog is cool!

He used to bark at me pretty bad...But now he just jumps on my shoulders...That chihuaha can play in the NBA he jumps high!!!!

If its for you? Wouldnt you want something big like a labrador or boxer?

I gave my Moms chihuaha a heart stroke back when we had one...me and my pitbull/boxer went on our daily cross country runs and it just dropped..lol. The chihuaha was fine...just never took him out again..

Bulldogs have too many health problems, skin problems and they can't even run, much less take them out on a warm day and way too expensive for all the headaches. Not a very good choice.

If I had the time/room for another dog-I'd get one of those "mini" Bulldogs-they're adorable.

SEEEEE told you!!!!

Haha, I like alot of energy out of a dog and I have alot of time to spend with the dog, I have school M-F for 2.5 hours in the morning and a partime job thats like 22 hours a week, so I have time to spend with the bugger.

I think the bull dogs look cute, but the thing is it really doesnt fit my personality, not as much as a jack russel terrior... or miniature pincher...
