i bought my first RC airplane today...the mini super cub!!...woo hoo....another new hobby

gee, thanks brandon ( and all the other guys who were on that RC thread)

and boy did i find out how hard flying was...i crashed like 15 times today!!!!! but i felt like :D the whole time, i love being a kid

Every Sunday when I pass the Smyrna High School (In Smyrna), there is always a group of people with tents setup flying helicopters and planes in the large field in the front.

Wonder if it's a RC club?

Steve

I love you, too, John. :D :D

Its another VERY addictive and *cough*expensive*cough* hobby, though! :)

Steve, I will have to check that out. That's really neat that they fly at Smyrna high school (which is in Smyrna ;) :p ). It may be one of the local clubs. There are fortunately a couple. I know the club in Murfreesboro is pretty nice... I think BFI built the club a really nice, paved runway. Never been there, though... I'm too afraid to get hooked again. :D

yea, i saw the prices of some of the planes at hobby-lobby in brentwood....pricey, but they sure LOOK like....im hoping i can up my skills, and if not, i might buy some anyways because they look awesome!!!

Hobby Lobby is an AWESOME store, man! They actually manufacture/distribute a lot of planes.

Just like reefing, it will take some time to grasp everything. Helicopters are even worse because you have to constantly be aware of which direction the craft is facing.

Fun stuff, though, man! I can't wait until we have more room so I can store a few! :) I wish I wouldn't have had to sold my nitros last summer, but its all good. Gives me a chance to dive into electric, although I suspect I'll probably end up flying both... gotta love a Saito on a nice 3D plane... maybe I'll get an Ultra Stick... hehe.

Brandon

I just went to IRCHA last weekend and the helicopter flying was intense. There were 954 pilots this year! They had night flying with fireworks and it was probably the coolest thing I have ever seen.

I really like helicopters because of the challenge. It definitely is harder to learn to fly them.

I actually had to give up flying 3D Helis so I could get into saltwater. I still fly planes though. And somehow my beautiful wife just let me buy a four stroke powered paramotor. That should be interesting. But yes helis can horribly expensive. One second your flying inverted patterns next thing you know you just bought 300 bucks in parts and your whole day is spent rebuilding. I miss it but then I dont.

Oh an yes NeveSSL the ultra stick is a great plane. I recently sold mine to get a Nitro FUNTANA. But I miss my stick sometimes, it was sooo stable. That plane with a touch up elevator would simply just land itself. Its a great plane to learn basic aerobatics on. I sold mine though because it simply couldnt do the 3-D I wanted it to do.

Definitely, tkimmons85. :)

So, John... which plane are you getting next? I'm POSITIVE you've been looking... its almost as bad as "Which coral/fish/tank/controller(for me) are you going to get next?". :D

Brandon

i havent done too much research.....just ONLY a couple hours a night....lol

ive been reading up at rcgroups about all the easy to fly stuff, the reason why i started out with the mini super cub....i would probably do more research once i get the hang of flying the darn thing.....thank goodness the super cub is good with crashes!!!

i dont know what kind of plane i want yet...but those bi-planes look so cool

what kind of stuff you got brandon, any suggestions?

Only a couple of hours a night is all? Yeah, RC Groups is a great site, and is actually based in Nashville. :) Its a freaking HUGE site! RCUniverse is another good one.

Man, the only thing I've got right now is a radio...

I'm hoping to get a GWS Estarter, though, as my "first" plane. How many planes have I owned? 3 or 4 I think. However, I never have been able to completely learn to fly due to various reasons, mostly a lack of time.

Not sure on the second plane... I love nitro planes, but there are some seriously awesome acrobatic electrics, too. So who knows! Right now I'd just like to put my Futaba 8U Super to good use! :D

Brandon

The absolute easiest and best starter plane is the GWS slowstick. And cheap too ! I have one just to mess around with in my front yard. The plane itself with motor is 30 bucks I think. Then you need radio, reciever, servos, battery, etc.

Yeah, I really thought about starting with one of those and then putting a camera on it as so many have done for some fun. :) But instead I think I'm gonna get the E-Starter. I already have a transmitter. I'm gonna go brushless and li-pos, too. Should be around $150 total not including a charger or transmitter. :)

Brandon

i looked at that too, but wanted something that was ready to fly right out of the box......and i didnt understand much of what i was reading either like all the equipment and such

oh yea, how long are the flight times of the GWS slowstick, and are they ok with wind?...i want to find a second plane that could take some wind (once i get the flying part down of course)

I think they are fun in the wind but others would probably disagree. I like it because with a tail wind you can get it going so fast it can get wing shutter. Also with a head wind you can use throttle control to make it stand still in the air like a kite. But for for someone starting out it could probably be a handful. Because its just styrofoam and it doesnt have alot of power its pretty squirrley in the wind. Now that my be different with a brushless motor but I have never flown one with a brushless. Also with my brushed motor I get about 15 min flight times.

Now as for finding a plane that handles wind, the heavier and more powerful you go the more stable it is in the wind. But in reality no plane is ever "easy" to fly in the wind for a beginner. And if you are just learning you should probably pick a nice calm day. If I had my pick of any plane it would have to be a 30 % edge 540 with a twin cylinder gas engine. The vertical and 3-D capabilities on these planes is unmatched. They have the weight and the power which makes them incredible. I just cant convince my wife to let me drop 3 to 4 grand on one. Maybe one day I'll find a deal on craigslist.

I had a 28% cap 232 and it flew great. I lost it in a flat spin when I got too low over the trees and couldn't pull up. I still have the 3W60 waiting for a plane but I will probably never get another that big. Besides the obvious cost issues it is such a pain to take to the field. My next plane will probably be a profile Mojo. I flew one once and it was super stable in hovering, knife edge, and most anything 3D.

Wow... those turbo props are awesome! I'd be happy with a 4-stroke for now, though. :D

Now Mike, we all know you can't have any spare parts lying around because they usually beg for the rest of the parts they need to have a complete plane! Its as bad, if not worse than having a spare skimmer or tank lying around! :D So, having said that, whatcha gonna put that 3W60 in? ;)

Brandon

If I got planes/helis for all of my spare parts I have laying around in my basement I wouldn't be able to afford a place to put them. :)
