OT: This is Depressing...

Just so you know, that's totally not real ... I was just kidding. ;) I did get about 23mbps which is average for Comcast's "PowerBoost" which doubles your bandwidth for about 45 seconds.

I remember when I was a kid I used to BBS (during the CompuServe days) and was absolutley delighted to get 200 bytes/second on my 1200 baud modem.

Thats probably because 1) the modem you were connecting to was 300 baud or 2) the quality of the connection was poor -- which wasn't so uncommon 25 years ago.

As far as I know, modem speeds increased over the years (1980-1992) due to the advances in technology in reducing line noise and compressing the data. I believe the FCC limits speeds to 53K over a phone line, and that is why we didn't see anything faster than 56K modems for awhile ... of course, then there was broadband.

 You left out 3) modem was defective out of the box!

Since I was unable to drive at the time I couldn't get back to SF to get it replaced. I was a SYSOP for a few BBS's back then, well versed in the technology I was using :D

Yeah, same here ... I ran a BBS from 1989-1994 ... was a member of FIDONet and I actually wrote by own front-end echomail server and started my own echomail network.

Here is an application that I wrote (which was used as a front-end for shareware a CDROM) long ago ...

And here is an article when I was a kid:

The good 'ole BBS days ... I'll miss you. ;)

By 89 I had moved on from the BBS's. I couldn't resist the lure of surfing since I live in Santa Cruz :) I bet we crossed paths a few times though ;)

BTW I love the opening of your article..

From the confines of his small, cluttered bedroom

Yes, you were spoiled by the silicon valley ... I grew up in the midwest and as you may know, the http protocol was only used in universities until small ISPs started popping up ... and I lived in a hick town in Indiana with NO computer stores within 15 miles.

Small, cluttered ... yes, and full of old computer cases, dot matrix printers, 40MB hard drives, and computer junk. ;)

WOH WAIT....you had a 40mb HD? Oh how I would have killed for a 40mb HD. I went from tape to floppy and always dreamed of a HD :( FWIW I had to travel 30+ miles to get to a computer store. It was never an easy feat, but I did have the Computer Shopper to help me get stuff mail order!

BTW I meant surfing as in the ocean, not web :D

I think that was probably 9 years old when I finally got a 40 meg drive ... had a 20 meg drive that came w/ my Tandy 1000 SX, but I did also have a classic 4.77mhz XT w/ a tape drive. ;)

Hehe - I actually did have an acoustic coupler 300 baud ... picked it up at a local flea market where I grew up. I remember playing with an old "laptop" (weighed about 90 pounds) - I think it was running CP/M.

When I was a kid I opened a shareware booth at the flea market too ... I actually made a lot of money doing that. I wrote an install program and started selling copies of games and such.
