OT Verizon FIOS

Speaking for tv from Verizon and comparing it to cablevision it blows it away. My friend got FIOS and his tv never looked so good. His box never locks up the way cablevisions does. My house mate has a HD box and the picture is pixelated. Supposedly with Verizon its not going to be. . My bandwith changes depending how many of my neighbors are on. As for phone ive been with vonage so i cant comment on CV. I do know during the day the call is choppy but that has to do with the bandwith i lose when alot of people are online.

My parents had FIOS and all the issues you describe they had with it then they tried to go back to regular Verizon telephone and have just basic tv and Verizon told them it would cost 225 to redo the house for regular services. and that they had to pay a cancellation fee to remove the services.

Cablevision will actually go out to a home convert it back to a normal setup and there is no cancellation fee with cablevision and they actually are paying the verizon cancellation fees for those who want to come back.

this month alone out of the 15% of ppl who switched to FIOS we had 8% come back because of the hidden fees they hit you with after the first bill

also the FIOS box they install you are paying for if you look at the fine print the FIOS documentation states

" Power for services provided on the Verizon FIOS netowkr must be supplied by the customer. Means there goes more money to lipa to power your new FIOS installation.

Fios works the same as CV with the telephone service unless you have a battery backup or generator when the power goes out FIOS telephone goes out also because the phone is being powered by your house.

Blow a breaker in the home and you can loose tv/internet/phone.

there are lots of other things people arent realizing and then coming back to CV as bad as it is.

i look at it this way i can pick up the phone and call cablevision at 4am and speak to someone on a saturday or sunday

Verizon is there Mon-fri 8am-6pm your stuck until monday morning if nothing is working over the weekend and thats for the FIOS support.

I still hate cable, but I'm not ready to explore options. If I were paying Verizon the same, or even less for the same services, I'd hate them, too. I just don't like paying people for stuff. :)

I had the CV business service and had to pay extra, ports 80 and 25 they were only open when I subscribed to boost. To properly send email you need to have reverse DNS properly set, Cable wouldn't change that for me so I was never able to use my in-house email server.

FIOS has a built in battery backup for the telephone to prevent the power outage issue CV has.
Last time I checked my CV bill there was no credit for the power the CV modem used so you pay for it with both.

Blow a breaker in the house, the last thing I'm worried about is tv/phone/internet.

No question the Verizon customer service is disgusting but I have been able to get support on weekends and after hours. If they can't fix it over the phone you're stuck.

Both have thier pros and cons but like many here the Dolan family has taken enough of my money.

yeah i hear ya i dont mind my cable bill at least i know i can get a tech to my home any day 7 days a week and i can speak with someone at any time.

When it comes to Customer service. CV ranks higher on the JD power poll than Verizon does and thats a big thing

But everyone does have different expierences and not everyone is going to like the service and not everyone is going to hate it

when it comes down to it we must go with what feels right for some its verizon for others its CV.

I know my internet speeds are real sweet

and as far as the ports

port 80 is blocked for businesses without boost service
port 25 for all businesses is open i just double checked for port 80 you do need boost but the SMTP port is open for all.

So im not sure who you spoke with but i looked at business class ports sheet and its open for 25 blocked for 80.

but your not with us anymore anyway.

After the year intro price to verizon their prices will skyrocket. Right now for most houses a call takes at least a couple of hours if not the whole day and 1-2 techs. That costs a lot of money that will eventually need to recouped. They are also union which costs more overall for service calls, techs and customer support people.

I think it is great that there is competition it means more innovation for all of us. But don't kid yourselves into thinking that there Verizon will keep rates lower than cv for long.

Outages are a fact of life no matter who you have. Granted CV is far superior in customer service. Also if in a year my prices skyrocket then ill switch back to CV. It becomes a game of who offers the better deal. I remember having 4 CV employees in my living room over a internet problem. Finally the 4th guy there figured it out. Was kinda funny!
Supposedly from what im told Verizon will call you 2 months before your year is up and offer you the promotion that there offering new customers.
Keith the verizon electric usage constitutes the power for the battery backup they supply. I dont see much difference between that and powering the modem from CV. Atleast ill have phone for i believe 8 hours after the electric goes out. And ofcoarse you will be biased towards CV being they sign your check every week LOL

I Support just the Optimum voice im an engineer for them so thats all i look at. i dont deal with internet or TV but its astounding how many people are switching back from fios and if im not mistaken verizon charges for their battery backup the same as CV and the fios box used alot more power than our Modem. is what they are getting at.

i think the last thing i heard is the fios box is about 350watts of electricity your powering.

or something obscure like that i dont remember so dont quote me but its a good add to the power.

I have a battery backup on my CV modem. Power goes out I still have phones.

Most people have no phones when the power goes out anyway. Almost all people now have a cordless phone the requires power to work.

BTW here are my download speeds with CV
cvspeed.jpg

I have a generator, so if power goes out, I not only have a working cordless phone, I have lights so that I can find it ;)

Maybe ill plug the ole kill a wat meter into the box LOL I have a generator as well so its semi moot. I can always switch back if im not happy!

CV was always last in the tech. forefront. Last to get a hd, last to get a dvr, last for stability. Last for sport packages, last for the YES network.

I have Directtv and any time those CV sales rept come to the front door, I tell them, I am a buffalo fan, you will never give me what I want. They begin to stammer and tell me how I can beat the system, then I tell sure I'll switch but that I will screw them. They tell me no deal.. How funny, now get off my property.

How's that Video on Demand service with Direct TV?

Hows the nhl, nba, mbl, nfl, or just about any other sport package. Lets not forget the 100ppv channels. VOD is coming very shortly.

But I don't want to get into a contest. All fun

Its cool how this thread has turned into all forms of TV, net and phone. I cant wait to send my box back. It freezes up wayyy to much!
