Our pond is around 3,000 gallons. I think just like aquariums, it's easier to keep the larger the body of water. We do a spring clean out where we drain all of the water and powerwash the rock. We use bacteria cultures to get everything restarted. It's worth the LONG day of work.

Sweet looking pond, the landscaping looks great. How deep is it? Do you run a bottom drain? Just curious, I been doing some reading and I have heard that they cutdown on maintenance and remove the detritus from the bottom of the pond.

No bottom drain. I use the Aquascapes systems, and they don't recommend one. They are all about biological filtration, and that's great. I don't think a bottom drain would be any problem if it didn't leak around the drain/liner connection. I would only use it once a year, so I guess I wouldn't want the weakness in my liner or the expense.

My goldfish have been brought inside in for the past four years in October. This year, they got left out. After the pond thawed, the bluegill, bass and frogs were all dead but everyone of those goldfish were swimming. I didn't keep a hole in the ice or a heater in it all winter. They are survivors but will never see the inside of the house again. I haven't started the waterfall yet as I need to do a big water change. I only fed the fish this weekend when it was 80 degrees. Now I'll wait til the water temp is 65 before they'll eat again. My pond is about 1200 gal and about 4 ft deep.
