Well my company just called a meeting with all the employees today. the sublect of the meeting? Well we were all given a 60 day notice the plant is being closed down March 24th. Looks like a good time to go back to school. Just what to go back for? I am thinking computer programing and PC repair.

I'd say go into nursing or healthcare if you want a guaranteed job with a phat paycheck! The IT market is rather small on the tech support side. A lot more opportunities on the programming side though. I myself am trying to get out of IT support and into web design and developing.

Nurses with a phat paycheck. That makes me laugh :)

IA ranks 50th in pay for nursing. And the 2 yr program pays the same as a 4yr degree.

Yes you will have a guaranteed job but how do you feel about cleaning up someone elses you know what.

My wife was a nurse and is now a nurse practitioner and if you go on to that line of work she has gone to school for 7 years and has her master's had to go through a few years of clinical work and the pay is pretty good but the hours are just as demanding. On top of that, before you can apply to some NP programs you must first be a nurse for at least 2 years.

I have the utmost respect for all who are in the health care profession. The things they have to put up with is just unbelievable.

On the programming front, there seems to be a large demand for well skilled and trained programmers in the CR area. But there are also a lot of them in the area and I haven't checked the job market lately. But @ Rockwell we are constantly hiring new grads. Go to a reputeable 4 year school and graduate and you are pretty much guaranteed a job in some of the marketplaces around here. While you are there as well, check into getting internships or work study programs.

GL with whatever you decide.

I also find it funny you mentioned Computer Programming and PC Repair. Some of the programmers I have met don't even know the first thing about repairing a computer :> They really are two seperate fields.

I'll second what cabenn said.

1) My wife is an RN and she is totally underpaid for what she has to do (especially considering how much the Dr's make). And unless you are willing to work REALLY crappy hours at the hospital you are definitely not going to get rich working as a nurse in Iowa.

2) I can tell you that .NET programmers with any level of real experience are in extremely high demand in this area. I'm an officer in the local .NET users group and we constantly have recruiters calling us and showing at our meetings looking for people.

3) PC Repair and Programming are very different fields. You could probably ramp up in PC repair fairly quickly, but for that very reason their aren't that many jobs and a lot of the ones out there aren't that great (Best Buy Geek Squad for example). Programming on the other hand takes a lot more training/schooling, but if you're good at it you can make a lot of money (especially if you have the skills and are willing to work as an independent consultant).

I don't know. My buddy got his nursing degree at Mercy College. He makes 65k something or other right out of school. He does get paid more because he works the Fri, Sat, Sun shift. He works in the ER so no buttwiping for him. But like you said you have to be ok around blood, guts, feces etc. Not my cup of tea. That's why I work with sterile(?) computers until I move to the tropics and start my dive business.:rolleye1:
